He's won me over. Never got the hype he received for his performances against us in the Championship for Forest, was woeful last season, but this season he's stepped up and proved a very solid player. Spurs game aside, he's been consistently very good.

Perchy is the new Colo, crap for a season or so and then...

Watch your fucking mouth.

Seriously though Perch hasn't put a foot wrong since he lost Drogba for their goal at SJP (and how many people has that happened to?). He has the confidence to play it our from the back as well so he might just stick around for a while.

'Perchinho' Is On Song With Fans

Tongue-in-cheek though it may have been, when the first chant of 'we've got Perchinho' reverberated through the Hawthorns' Smethwick End on Sunday, it marked a watershed in the Newcastle United career of James Perch.

The witty ditty followed yet another vital interception from the versatile man from Mansfield, who has been a standout performer in each of the Magpies' last two games - both of which have ended with a victory for Alan Pardew's side.

His affectionate new nickname among the travelling Toon Army is a huge turnaround from his early days on Tyneside, when he endured a difficult start following his summer 2010 move from Nottingham Forest.

But Perch has slowly been changing supporters' opinions this term, making 20 appearances in a variety of positions and excelling whether he plays at left-back, as he did at Arsenal two weeks ago, as a holding midfielder, where he shone against Norwich, or in the centre-half role he occupied during the second half against West Bromwich Albion.

So the 26-year-old admitted that the song was music to his ears - even if he was too focused on the action on the pitch to properly hear it at the time.

"To be honest, I heard something - but I thought 'that can't be about me'," he told nufc.co.uk. "But I heard after the game that it was, and it's good when you've got the faithful behind you; when you're playing away and you're winning and they're happy.

"It's always good when fans sing about you and I'm delighted, really.

"I hope I'm starting to win a few people over now. Obviously it's taken a little bit of time for different reasons, with the start I had and all the rest of it.

"I'm hoping now that they can see that I work hard and I always have done. I can play a number of positions and I just want to do my best for the club.

"It always helps when the team's winning as well. I've came into a number of positions, I've played and more importantly we've won which makes it a lot easier to look back and say 'yeah, we did well.'"

The three points gained in the West Midlands took Newcastle level on points with fifth-placed Chelsea and eight clear of their next opponents Liverpool, who are currently seventh in the Barclays Premier League.

And two successive wins have been very welcome as Alan Pardew's side continue to vye for European football at the end of the season, with just eight games now remaining.

"We knew a couple of weeks ago that we had ten big games and we're just checking them off one by one," revealed Perch. "That's two now that we've won and got maximum points from, which is just what we needed.

"It was definitely one of the best away performances of the season, especially knowing how hard it is to go to the Hawthorns and even get any result. It was massive, and West Brom were like our little bogie team as well.

"So to get one over them after they got one over on us earlier in the season was a great win. I think the attacking side of things yesterday was unbelievable; people watching that would have been really impressed.

"You've got players there who can win games single-handedly. You've got Demba (Ba), who's very good, Cabs (Yohan Cabaye) and Hatem (Ben Arfa), who was ridiculous yesterday. The things he can do with a ball and when he's running at pace can cause any defender problems.

"We knew they were going to change it at half-time. We knew they'd go two up top and just pump long balls into the box and try to put us under pressure. To be fair to them, in the first ten or 15 minutes they looked like they were going to do that, but even after the first goal we managed to keep calm and see the game out.

"And I thought we played some good football in the second half as well."

bless him

Another player who's sale value must have doubled in the last month. Utility players who are quick and can tackle are worth a lot more than £1m.

Well done Chrissy Hughton, now we are seeing what a good eye he had for a player. Considering he had peanuts to spend in any case.

I hope this is him and Guthrie set as players and that it's not just form. Both of them have improved immeasurably this season.

The lad's definitely won me over. Just read back some of my comments about him from earlier on in the season - I'm quite embarrassed by them tbh!

He's made a massive improvement and he's shown that he is dependable in DM and at full back. I'm still iffy about him playing CB though but as it stands, needs must.

Shame he had no idea how to correctly manage squad players such as Best, Guthrie, Perch and Ryan Taylor. All of them have looked spectacularly better under Pardew. Guthrie's performances away to West Brom this season and last season (despite being 3rd choice CM in both managers pecking orders) have been like chalk and cheese.

When a player is called upon in an incredibly important position, rises to the occasion and plays his socks off for the team, you really can't help but love a performance and the player himself.  He's done very well when called upon and for that I am very grateful.  Hopefully this continues on the weekend in an important match.  Massive credit to Pards for instilling the confidence within Perch and long may this form continue, hopefully this helps the lad turn the corner and this is more the standard of his true abilities.

Mind you, he has a rocket shot (nufctv) which I never would have guessed either.

Wouldn't have minded giving him a go in place of Simpson at right back. Probably not sensible this weekend, like.
