Unbelievable
Well, well, well.. Nolan’s departure might have ripped the main goalscoring threat from United’s midfield but bigger than that, it took away the dominating influence from the Newcastle dressing room. Some inside St James’ Park think that was required. They point to a bonus dispute at the back end of the season which saw Nolan lead a rebellion against the hierarchy that saw them refuse a lump sum if they finished in the top 10 – a cash prize that a scolded Mike Ashley then offered to training ground staff instead. Hmmmm..... I've never ever liked player power, so if this is true then I'm backing the club on this one.

So, am I reading that right - the players refused the lump sum bonus, so Ashley offered it to the training ground staff instead?
JH
"Hmm, I don't like how Nolan revolted against us. Let's sell him Mike" "Yes, but instead of accepting the first offer, you know because we want rid of him that badly, we'll wait to see if the team in question comes back with a bigger offer"

Fits nicely with the complete lack of effort in the 2nd half v WBA.

SteveMc
There have been a couple of articles where a bonus dispute has been alluded to. Wonder what the craic is. It can't be as simple as being upset at being offered money for finishing in the top 10. Was it half a million quid that the backroom staff were meant to be getting. Maybe the players were offered more and then it was changed??? Worrying if there was some kind of revolt beacause even if Nolan led it there will be a fair few left at the club who were involved. Wallace
Poor Ashley. How has he managed to lumber himself with all these players who only care about money? This scenario will be repeated each season. And it can't be because we only manage to recruit greedy players. There is obviously something in the way the hierarchy deal with the players that is causing these problems and it will backfire big style at some point. Nolan always managed to get the players focussed on playing for NUFC rather than dwelling on grievances off-pitch - not sure who will do that now. If there is any truth in this story, then Nolan has been doing precisely the opposite of what you describe. And I can't see a single reason to assume this scenario will repeat every season.
