Realistic Transfer Targets January 2011

We should defo go tits out for the lad.  Carroll and Keane would vbe a very dangerous pairing for teams to cope with.  Get him on loan and see what he is like.

Arry quoted today as saying he's only leaving on a permanent deal.

Ahh right, didn't see arrys bit.  Fair enough.  Well if they want daft money for him, good luck.  Not many teams have cash to chuck around.

I'd be inclined to sell the club to him (great fans, stadium etc etc) and then stick a silly offer in for him (say £2.5m/£3m) and let him chuck a hissy fit to come. He's that type of fella.

I'd not pay much more for him cos he's near enough finished.

Not fair on the lad.  Was on fire pre-season too, I now that doesn't prove much though.  He's not been given a chance this season.  He's probably finished at top 4 level, but for teams below that he's a great player and surely has 2 or 3 years left.

Maybe I am. In fairness, he'd be a good short term signing but if I was M.A I'd be asking whether it's a signing we need to make or whether we could chance a couple of unknowns from abroad for the same money who would increase in value in the long term - Tiote-esque.

If he's confident we'll not go down then why invest in Keane who'll be knocking 32 by the end of next season and won't generate a return.

Playing devils advocate a bit here but just trying to get into the way of thinking of the Owner who, after the initial summer, hasn't bought an established big name player iirc.

Don't get me wrong, I think your very right to believe it's possible to land a striker from abroad that could be as good as Tiote was.  It's just not always that easy to gamble on the unknown and Keane to me will be far better than Ameobi, Lovenkrands, Xisco and Ranger for the next 2 years easily.  I don't believe we are going down at all, so think he would be a good player to ensure we finish higher and to bring goals if Carroll was to be out for any length of time.  I'm scared of relying on the rest of our strikers for goals else.

People talk about Ashley thinking about another Tiote but on the other hand the lad in bold could equally stick in his mind about gambling on young strikers from abroad. I won't get into that debate again but Ashley won't deem it as a successful transfer.

I think SWP and Keane would be terrible signings, both are clearly on the way down. Would be a similar to when we signed people like Duff, Geremi, Smith, Butt etc. I'd much prefer us to take a gamble on someone from overseas.

I agree, a loan for either would be welcome though.

can't believe we're turning our noses up at SWP. ok maybe he's frustrating and hasn't cut it at international level, but that is still above where we're currently at. we've only just got one player back in the squad!

keane would be great on loan but once harry mentions "the highest fee", we're out of the race.

SWP is absolutely f***ing s*** and no better than Routledge.

Wouldn't want us spending a penny on the likes of him or Keane for that matter. I'd take Keane on loan but that's not gonna happen.

Agree with SWP

I'd have Keane on a short term deal

A half season loan on Keane would be fine. Keane isn't the player he was but he's still Premiership standard. If we're going to bring someone in as a striker for a half season we need to know what we are getting not taking a punt on someone. We knew what we were getting with Harewood and that worked.

I suspect though that Spurs will be looking to sell Keane rather than just loan him out - and that's a very different proposition. 2 year contract maybe? But would he take a wage cut to come to us? Villa would probably be prepared to match his current wage or come close to it.

We should be targetting the likes of Vela and Dos Santos. They are both in situations where they are not being given a consistent opportunity. They will both get this opportunity in our team. Their fees or loan fees won't be huge and their wages won't be either. They clearly have very good attributes and just need to be given some confidence, and Hughton is a good manager when it comes to getting the best out of players.

Look at the likes of Elmander, Bale and Wellbeck just as some examples. This time last season all these players wouldn't even have registered as players you would have necessarily wanted. The likes of Vela and Dos Santos are worth a punt and would be savy moves. Leave some other mugs to bring in the Keanes and SWPs, as they are just the same old recycled rubbish.

Savy my foot.

I promise you you'll be sick at the sight of Dos Santo constantly failing to beat his man and playing the invisible man role time and time again. Gets barged off the ball like he's not even there too. He'd warm your bench after 2 games i guarantee.

Dos Santos is shite and Vela would have the same kind of impact for us as Rossi did imo.

You think Hughton just wouldn't play him? Doesn't strike me as that kind of manager, if he was to get him in he'd use him.

I'd still have Keane, any day of the week. He's still got a lot left in the tank. Providing it was a modest fee we'd be daft not to take the chance to sign him. He's a proven goalscorer in this league and would keep us up, imo.

SWP, absolutely no way.

Keane on loan would be good January business. I think we'll try for him too.

If we're looking for someone to "kick, scamper, cross badly" then I'd rather it wasn't SWP because he infuriates me. Overrated.
