Shay Given (now retired)

Recommended Posts

Probably in the minority but still cant forgive the way he left. Jumped the sinking ship and the paddys he's thrown when Harpers been in his place previously isn't something I would clap the guy for. He's been a great servant to Newcastle for a good portion of his career yes, but lets not forget for a good part of that time we certainly weren't crap and he would have been very well looked after financially, it's not like he did it to be a good guy for us.

If he really wanted out then I see no reason why he couldn't have been straight up with everybody else and agreed a deal then to join them in the summer, to see the season out and do his best to keep us up.

Guest BlacknWhiteArmy

He was so far away from Cisse's shot it was hilarious.

Funniest thing I've ever seen. LOL.

He wanted out because Ashley had "wrecked the club" IIRC. I wonder what he's thinking now looking up at us from 13th in the table?

Probably thought he'd get more time at City before Hart became just immense.

Yes it's such a shame that didn't work out for him.

Yet you've got "Ashley Out" as your custom title? ???

We're where we are despite of Ashley. We've had a huge amount of good fortune. Make no mistake; we could have done a Leeds and he'd not have shed a tear. Still has a huge way to go.

  • 1 year later...
Shay Given is set to be handed £5million to write off the remainder of his Aston Villa contract while Charles N'Zogbia looks set to go. The 37-year-old former Republic of Ireland veteran goalkeeper still has three years remaining on a £60,000-a-week contract he signed when former Villa boss Alex McLeish snapped him up from Manchester City in summer 2011. However, with Brad Guzan now firmly established as current boss Paul Lambert's first-choice custodian at Villa Park, the club are looking to get him off the books and will pay him a handsome figure to part ways. In a further lowering of the wage bill, France international winger N'Zogbia is also poised to depart with ambitious French side Monaco ready to take him to his homeland this summer following their promotion to Ligue 1. The former Wigan and Newcastle man cost Villa £9million in 2011 and the club are set to try and recoup at least half that fee while also getting his salary off the wage bill. As we reported previously, veteran central defender Richard Dunne is leaving at the end of his contract having missed all of the past season because of a groin problem, while record signing Darren Bent and Alan Hutton are both likely to depart too.

Could be Harper's replacement? :p

This should serve as a reminder to a lot of players when clubs like City and Chelsea are interested.

You end up at Villa and get £5 million in fuck off early money.

Scott Sinclair is currently hoping for this.

Yup, you might get a big pay day but they will replace you very quicky as they chase the best players in the world.

McLeish was nuts to give a 36 year old keeper a five year contract. Utter fucking nuts.

Given is a good keeper and deserves to be starting matches, not on his arse on the bench. Unfortunately, though his brilliant shot stopping saved us numerous times under McLeish, Guzan has been miles better this season.

Commands his area way, way better than Given ever did.
