Not worthy of a thread - 2018 FIFA World Cup edition

so looks like the world cup will be switched to january now that the fifa player's union backs the change.

yep, qatar can easily hold this world cup, all they have to do is build a handful of cities from scratch in the desert, a dozen pre-fab stadiums, change half of their laws about women, gays, israelis, alcohol, freedom of the press and so on, break all of fifa's guidelines about hosts cities and their facilities, destroy the international football calender for a whole year or two, invent a currently fictitious air conditioning technology, import tens of thousands of slave labourers and it'll be fantastic.

with so many hoops to jump through you have to wonder why fifa were so keen on qatar.

maybe louise taylor knows why.

Out of interest, which leagues would benefit from a January world cup?

MLS??

SPL  -   Means we dont have to see it little our TVs.

If we had a January WC, the training camps would start at the beginning of December and most players wouldn't return until February. We'd have players pulling out of league games so they dont get injured before the WC.

Ridiculous predicament FIFA have got themselves into by giving the WC to a country about half the size of Jimmy Hills chin.

Russia, the Scandies.

Not even them, their Premier League schedule is changing to 'FIFA Standard'.

The answer for that really simple, money, Qatar's shaikh would've never attended the announcment of the winners had he known that his country wouldn't win it, he already knew that they got it most likley because they paid Fifa off to give it to them, who am i to complain anyway, the world cup will be just 40 minutes away from where i live :D

Would be immediately after the end of the Asian leagues' seasons.

By 2022 we could be good enough for this to matter.

Fuckin madness what is F.I.F.A trying to do to the beautiful game

FIFA president Sepp Blatter expects the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to be held in the winter to avoid the searing heat in the region in the summer.

Qatar won the right to host football's global showpiece last month despite temperatures in the Gulf emirate reaching 40 degrees Celsius in June and July when the tournament is traditionally staged.

Blatter went on record Friday to say that a switch to winter would make more sense, citing health concerns for players.

"I expect it to be in the winter because when you play football you must protect the main people, the players," he told gathered reporters in the Qatari capital Doha ahead of the Asian Cup, which starts later Friday.

"We will take it up at our executive committee meeting in March," he added.

German legend Franz Beckenbauer, a FIFA executive committee member, first raised the prospect of a winter World Cup in January and Michel Platini, the president of UEFA, the European governing body, is also believed to support the idea.

But it would have serious implications for the major domestic leagues in Europe which would be in full swing during this period.

Qatar's bid promised to provide air-conditioned stadiums and training grounds to combat the intense heat, but doubts have been raised this would fully address the issue, particularly for supporters.

Blatter said Qatar organizers would have to approach FIFA about any change of dates.

"If they have any wishes on whether they want to change the basic conditions prevailing at the bidding process, then they have to make this demand of the FIFA Executive Committee," he said.

"The Executive Committee is free to change anything," he added.

"If there really is a will to change dates then we have enough time to do it because we still have 11 years to go."

Blatter has defended the decisions to award the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar, saying football had to break into new territories.

The annoying thing is that they were award the Cup on the basis that they would build air conditioned facilities to get over the summer heat issue. Two months later, it's not going to be a summer tournament.

If part of their original package had been a switch in the football calandar, I don't think they'd have won. This stinks.

Absolute knackers!

Their bid claimed they could cool the stadia to 28 degrees, so they'd be able to host games in june / july. If they can't do this then the world cup should be taken from Qater and awarded to a country with a realistic bid.

Scientists at Qatar University claim to have developed artificial clouds to provide shade for stadia and training grounds at the 2022 World Cup.

The fierce summer heat in the Gulf has led to concerns about conditions for players and fans at the tournament.

Temperatures in June and July can reach up to 50C.

Qatar were announced as hosts in December, and Fifa president Sepp Blatter initially said he expected the 2022 competition to be moved to winter.

But Blatter has since stated that he feels the tournament will go ahead as planned in the summer months.

Qatar plan to air condition their World Cup stadia via solar power, and now scientists have designed the 'clouds', which can be produced at a cost of $500,000 (about £310,000) each.

Saud Abdul Ghani, head of the mechanical and industrial engineering department at the university, said the 'clouds' are made from a lightweight carbon structure, and carry a giant envelope of material containing helium gas.

Four solar-powered engines move the structure via remote control.

Qatari president of the Asian Football Confederation Mohammed Bin Hammam, who will stand against Blatter for the Fifa presidency in June, has said his country is "well equipped to challenge the summer heat".

But global players' football union FIFPro backed a switch to winter, saying the Gulf country "does not provide suitable conditions for a festival of football such as the World Cup".

Qatar beat Australia, Japan, South Korea and the United States to host the tournament in the vote held by Fifa's executive committee on 2 December 2010 in Zurich.
