I'm clutching at straws but even if he was planning to change, do you think he'd announce it at his press conference?

"Well the 4-4-2 isn't working, so here's a detailed rundown of how we're going to set up against Bolton. Don't worry, I'll fax this to Owen Coyle too"

Hmm yeah, that is another way to look at it.

Standard 4-4-2 is such an outdated tactic and teams that play 3 in the middle easily take advantage of it.

Depends what players you have to play it. Obviously having two wingers that bring virtually nothing offensively is not going to help it work.

Saying in the press conference he isn't going to panic and make changes to our shape, style etc.  The rigid 4-4-2, with zero movement and aerial bombardment for 90 minutes is the way to go obviously

80's English football.

Yeah, same as the Obertan thing though.  I don't want him to totally slate him in public and say how shite he's been, but saying he's been fantastic is just outrageous.  Somewhere in the middle would have sufficed.

To counter what you say, he could have come out with "we WAS a bit lacking in certain areas last night.  I'm toying with the idea of tinkering with our shape slightly and maybe making one or two changes."  Then gives Bolton more to think about.

A sanguine Pardew is not minded to panic. "We're talking about the need for tweaks rather than surgery," he said on Thursday. The previous night his players had lost 3-2 to West Bromwich Albion at home but Newcastle's manager was not about to let it ruin Christmas. "A little bit of luck seems to have deserted us but I said all along that adversity was going to come our way at some point," he reflected. "Adversity always comes but it's dealing with it in the right manner that matters. We're not as solid as we were but our problems are more structural than anything else; a few things need tweaking."

That's more like it really. (It's a start anyway).

What was supposed to be the formation when Shola came on? He looked to start off out right with HBA continuing upfront and then he joined HBA and Ba upfront leaving nobody on the right which hindered us in trying to stretch the game chasing the goal.

After Shola came on I  think it was a "loose" 4-3-3 - and we got the goal we were chasing (which was not much to do with Shola admittedly). Trouble is we conceded another one.

Remove the right of middle part of our structure and replace it with a better piece from our workbench...

etc. etc.

Indeed - or you could just shave 9 inches off the crossbar and the right hand post at the Leazes end and I think it would have worked out ok.

Starting to look really stupid now. Getting the starting line up and subs wrong time after time and explaining it post match in a provoking manner imo. Was sat at SJP for the Swansea and WBA games and witnessed him making the same simple mistakes which has cost us points against lesser teams. The frustrating bit is that he wont change his attitude and game plan. He wont drop players who don't perform and he wont give players the chance to shine in the most effective way. So, what does he expect? Of course it's not just Pardew. The players has to take some blame as well, especially Jonas, Obertan, Shola and Sammy for the last couple of games. Ryan Taylor also is an obvious shout before Swansea and WBA. They aren't performing. Not at all. Not nly that, but they wont even put in a shift and do whats best for the team. Some fucking way to keep your place and give something to the fans. And Pardew is responding in all the wrong ways. Christ.

Didn't a resident WH fan say something similar too? I think he's been an improvement on Hughton (sadly) and has done well so far bar the odd result, but I still dont think he's the answer to getting the best out of what we have either.

Let's be fair, a manager's only job is to get the best out of his resources. Therefore none of us really expected any return from the games against Man U, Man City or Chelsea. To have got 1 point from games against paupers like Swansea, WBA and Norwich suggests those teams out-thought us comprehensively. One poor result is a blip. Three bad result against supposedly inferior opposition suggests it's the players not the manager who are getting the results.

Of course a bit harsh given the time they had on the pitch, but were still woeful.

Games where we scored atleast two goals previously resulted in:

Wins at: Fulham, Blackburn, Wolves, Stoke, Everton

Draw at: Tottenham.

Defence is where our points are leaking, think the swansea game masked that via them barely attacking.

we went to a back 3 and pushed Simpson wide right.

Woeful is harsh. Completely pointless sub though. Sammy needs to go on loan somewhere so he can develop.

Agreed. He's still much too raw atm, a loan will do him a lot of good.

Sammy can't change games unfortunately. Mind you, he could cause some problems using his pace but that's it really.

I hope if he does another call in radio show he gets picked up on our current tactics. What are those Cabaye comments, "the manager said it will all change when I arrive, we play the ball across the ground"- seems like the only tactic we have is to punt high to Best and hope he can manage to knock it to Ba.
