Today was a real mixed bag from him, but his tactics particularly towards the end of the game were really poor.

I don't think there was too much wrong with starting line up. He stuck with the same defence that kept a clean sheet against Swansea, retaining an impressive looking Santon. He can't of foreseen the dual disappointments of woeful Coloccini and Tiote, the pair of them are usually our most consistent players and they badly let him down today. To round up the positives his changes weren't too bad on paper either, the tacitcs on the other hand were a different matter.

As soon as the high line was caught out for the goal it should of been dropped, as a consequence we very nearly conceded a third follwoing the restart. On top of this his long ball tactics toward the end of the game were absolutely shocking. What's the point of bringing Ben Arfa on if you're going to launch the ball over his head? Ba also suffered from a lack off ball into feet. He really needs to look hard at the Colo-Perch pairing. They have no understanding what so ever, with a bit of luck his decision will be made earlier with the return of Williamson.

Agreed.

Colo and Williamson already have an understanding from playing with each other week in, week out last season - this can only benefit our defence.

Whey he obviously doesn't actually want to play Perch.

Really can't understand why Ben Arfa isn't on the park from the off. He said he was going to make us play attractive football this season, who better to have in your team than Ben Arfa? Every time he is on he creates something.

Needs to take a long hard look at himself after these last two 'performances'. We're starting to look like we did at the start of the season when we couldn't string 2 passes together going forwards, the only difference is an in form Ba.

4-4-2 isn't working,we go long too much and it doesn't work, when we go wide we've got two wingers who aren't doing it. Ba's playing by himself at times and the only guy who seems able to tee him up is sitting on the bench because he doesn't work hard enough to be a number 10? Bullshit.

He is being stubborn. He said he would play Ben Arfa up front off the striker and just refuses to play him anywhere else now. It is clear as day that he needs to play instead of Obertan out wide, everyone can see it except Pardew.

Not really sure what Pardew is upto. I mean the basics were wrong from the start and that isn't even taking into account the turgid and unimaginative selection we are having to put up with.

We are playing a team with two of the fastest forwards in the PL and so we kindly lay on a high line that was bordering on the half way line, which is normally suicidal and proved so today. Every time they broke (even with just two of them it looked like they might score).

THIS 442 leaves yawning gaps in the center of the park and a a weakend spine (no Cabaye no Taylor) leaves the side who are wanting to push on at home exposed -  it will everytime.  This misjudgement is magnifyied if YOU KEEP GIVING cheap posession away with long balls from the back - which we did as panic set in more often than not...THE TEMPTATION IS THERE OF COURSE CAUSE THE TWO BIG STRIKERS look like and enticing target till the ball is in the air and the defence closes down/steps up. Like SWANSEA more often than not WBA hogged the middle when we had the ball and we did have the ball for spells but there seemed to be no plan other than give it to someone to run up the side and throw it into the middle - that is basically the extent of what we did in the last two games. It would have been worse but for Ba manufacturing goals out of thin air.

Pardew who I didn't really want to over criticise is beginning to lose the plot and seems unware that other sides have watched us a few times and know we have NO PLAN B whatsoever/can't play through the middle/ or HBA IS NOT ON THE PITCH.

Stop starting Best and Obertan and let the free midfielder (normally Cabaye/tonight Vukic) come to the edge of the box or interchange passes so the whole team can come up while we retain posession. What are we doing? Just throwing it in from the side or the back over the head of the midfield and risking losing posession every time...It's really tedious to watch.

The season isn't ruined yet but if Pardew doesn't have the nous or guts to change it and play one striker it's gonna carry on like this.

Two home games against sides we should be beating down the drain.

Unforgiveable.

Excellent post Parky. It seems at the moment we are beating ourselves by giving the opposition a helping hand. Against Norwich's big bastard strikers we deliberately ignored the only central defensive option we had in Kadar and played two lightweight right backs instead...and got pulverised by their big bastard strikers.

Against Swansea who defended deep, we refused to bring on a player who might have had the imagination to open up a stubborn back line and persisted with players who are good lads but shit themselves at the thought of actually threatening the opposition for real.

Today we went with a high line against a team who are only dangerous on the break and gifted them goals as a result. Don't blame the players, blame the inept management. Pardew for England?

Agree with all of this. He seems reluctant to branch out from the 442 when we have the players to change. Demba is Boss at the moment so put him upfront on his own with a midfield of tiote cabaye and vuckic/ben arfa. Just to give us more possession and more control of the midfield. Shola has been useless in recent cameos and i keep seeing Pardew instructing krul and others to hoof it to him. Don't get me started on Obertan. Keep hoping he is guna pull some magic out his arse but it's becoming obvious with each passing game that it is unlikely to happen

That's another good point, Pardew doesn't seem to have much tactical flexibility. Pardew has won games by playing direct, but there's been others where it has been a risk from the start to attack teams who have the ability to kill us by exploiting the space we leave behind when we push up. Chelsea would be a prime example. When you know your own team lacks goalscorers, why not change to a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 to accommodate players like Vukic and HBA when you need goals? Or Abeid when you want to tighten things up? We haven't played badly in the last two games, but we have put too much faith in players who don't deliver and it was always going to catch up with us sooner or later.

Agree the high line was a disaster, but don't think he got much else wrong last night, the majority of the players just didn't perform. The subs he made were the right ones, we instantly looked more threatening when Ben Arfa came on for Best. Shola for Obertan made sense in theory but obviously the lazy git did next to nothing in his time on the field.

If the Santon sub was injury then I agree about the subs, but HBA should have started and we should never have attempted such a high line against WBA's rapid frontline. The style of play was also bad, but whether that is what Pardew wanted or whether the players were doing their own thing is unknown.
