Football's greatest - where does Lionel Messi rank?

Recommended Posts

That second goal last night man, fucking hell. He might have dumped Boateng on his arse but at least Boateng succeeded in putting him on his 'wrong' foot with Neuer to face. Didn't matter a fuck

Love Messi, as someone else has said watching him when I can is about the only enjoyment I get from football nowadays.

He's so good I always want Barca to win because I feel like he should never be on the losing team.

Zidane was mint, but that's bollocks like. He was an artist with the ball and was brilliant at finding space, but he wasn't unstoppable like, not by any means.

What is bollocks? Teams did man mark him especially in the Serie A back at Juventus when Juventus didn't even have the ball because they knew he could do stuff with the ball as soon as he got it. It's the same as Messi, they try to stop the ball from reaching him as much as possible.

It's the '(just)' that's annoying  Ronaldo doesn't really show up in big matches imo. He has moments and scores, just like Messi has, but I can't remember the last time Ronaldo had a big game against a big team. That's Messi's MO, with the obvious disclaimer that he didn't in the World Cup Final.

You're gonna make me feel dirty for defending Cristiano f***ing Ronaldo, but look at the past two games (Sevilla and Juve) and see who scored the goals that are keeping Real Madrid both in La Liga and the CL. Yeah, he doesn't have a good photo in a CL final like Messi does (except looking like a c*** showing off his muscles), but he's saved his team in some clutch moments.

If he missed the one against Juve, where he btw for the rest of hte game was as invisible as Bale he should've been slaughtered.

I can think of other domestic big games (Clásicos, mainly) where he's delivered the goods, but I'm gonna defer this to Froggy. Like fuck I'm going to keep defending Real Madrid players.

Really though he's faced the best player in the world and might have looked an arse but he's done a lot right, as much as he could clearly in turning Messi onto his other foot and into Neuers path. Just didn't matter. So good.

Like I said, well aware of him turning up at the big stage plenty of times, but he doesn't do that near the same amount as the other three which is what I base my ratings on.

Agreed if it wasn't for Barca I'd be totally scunnered with football at the moment. Still enjoy the odd match now again but Barca and Messi are nearly always fucking amazing to watch. First time I saw him at the camp nou he had a hat-trick within 25 minutes.

Poor Boateng. First it was David Luiz vs Suarez, now Boateng vs Messi. Who's next Varane/Ramos/Pepe or Bonucci/Chiellini

I don't particularly agree that Ronaldo always goes missing  But there are many big games where he's close to invisible, it's not his fault because as I already said he doesn't have the skills that Messi does to impact a game from deep. But it does happen and when it does happen the rest of the team have to step up and provide him with the ammo he needs to get the job done for his team. (tbf to them they usually do)

Last I'm going to say on that though, as I'm clearly doing a fucking awful job of explaining myself.

Without a doubt, and that second header against Sevilla was outstanding, but it's Juve and Sevilla. I'd like to watch him and see him really dominate a match against a big, big team.

I understand what you're saying, and I agree with you in general. Messi has much more in his arsenal to impact a game, but it's unfair to say that Ronaldo "doesn't turn up".

Nah, I think you are for once explaining yourself correctly. Well done. :p Seriously though, I absolutely agree with your sentiment. No one is saying he doesn't perform in big games, it's just a matter of how many of them has he performed in compared to players as Messi? How much can he really impose his playing style like the others?

I don't particularly think he doesn't turn up, I think he's easier to shut down and there's many examples of such.

Yeah, but it has more to do with the opposition's style than anything else. I.e. Atlético are great at denying space, but we quite suck at it. Yet we are the "bigger" team.

I think I have watched MAN DOWN Boateng about 100 times now.  It gets funnier and funnier.  It's not like Messi has just turned Titus Bramble inside out.  He's just done that to a top level, champions league and world cup winning centre back!

I can't get my head round the way he just goes down.  It's like someone felling a tree.

I have seen Zidane sleepwalk through way too many games to put him at the top of footballing altars. I think it takes something special for Messi and Ronaldo to be Messi and Ronaldo almost every game. That's why both have these ridiculous stats in addition of performing in big games. Their consistency is ridiculous.

Fair enough, I can't imagine rating a player based on what he does against Cordoba or Granada or Getafe for that sake though. CRonaldo doesn't perform nearly close to what Messi and Zidane did in big game, he disappears way too easily for my liking. The other impose themselves in big games.

This post is ridiculous.

But i'm pretty certain Ronaldo has scored key goals in Champions League semi-finals (2 against Bayern when they lost on penalties, 2 against Arsenal one season, another on Tuesday). And scored the opener when Man Utd. won theirs in the final.

Has a great El Clasico record.

He's a King.

Ronaldo is an unbelievable goalscorer. Messi is unbelievable at basically everything and is a real leader on the pitch usually. Not a leader as in shouting a lot but in the big games when things may not be going their way, he's always getting on the ball and trying to create or providing the breakthrough like last night. When things aren't going Ronaldo's way in big games he continues to stand up near the defensive line and doesn't take much responsibility on himself to win the game and can be anonymous at times when the space is cut down

I'm going to sound like a mug here, but he couldn't really miss tbh and outside of that he hardly touched the ball.

I forgot about the first goal but he was their to finish. That's a massive skill considering everyone knows he's the danger man. And that header from Bale's cross was sublime. He also contributed to the other goal if my memory serves.

Wasn't it also Ronaldo's cross that James headed against the crossbar vs Juve?

Also laid it on a plate for Chicarito against Atletico.

Didn't see that leadership at the world cup. He's not "always on the ball" either.

Ronaldo can be on the peripheral of games (as Messi was for 75 minutes last night) but he's The Difference for Real time after time. He's the man. Nothing less.
