How can that be a foul and therefore a yellow card, but not a penalty?

Guessing he's played advantage Man Utd because the challenge didn't affect Hernandez missing the chance? Strange one though.

Cant be advantage, the offence took place after the shot.....its a foul, its a yellow, it should have been a pen.

That seems right imo. It was a very short advantage but still an advantage.

The only thing I can see was that Phil Dowd asked his assistance if the ball had gone out or was still in play when the tackle was made. Assistant said out of play. Yellow card for the poor tackle. Since the ball was out of play, it was already a goal kick, so it couldn't be a penalty.

Playing advantage doesn't normally stop referees bringing play back for a penalty, does it?

Yeah, the but advantage and passage play was completed (albeit within a very short time!) and therefore you can't bring it back. It'd be like giving them two shots. If Hernandez hadn't got his shot away, or his ability to shoot had been impaired by the tackle - then fine.. but his shot was gone before the foul happened - and if it had gone in, there would be no penalty.

The foul was after the shot, there was no advantage.
