Bizarre decision.

However, him staying means Williamson won't be first choice. Why am I even thinking this though.

Why would Coloccini want to stay, thought he was desperate to fuck off back to Argentina?

McClaren likes to play total football from the back and there are not many better footballing centre halves in the country than Colo - yes he’s been poor for a while but you have to factor in that he’s been paired with Mike f***ing Williamson for most of the time not to mention the shower of s*** in midfield supposedly protecting our defence! Feel free to abuse me this season but I’m convinced he’ll have a good season alongside Mbemba!

It's definitely possible. A lot depends on how the midfield gels, and obviously if Mbemba adapts.

A lot might also depend on how well we manage to implement an improved possession/passing game overall. If we're controlling games with the ball it'll relieve the pressure on the defence and allow them to organise better.

We've been so s*** with the ball for years the defenders have always been under immense pressure in games, ran ragged basically.

Very good point again.

Think we just have to see what impact our change in approach has on the team, and then start to make necessary changes from there.

If Colo blows it then I'm sure Pardew will still be salivating for him in January anyway.

Isn't true. Martinez teams are an example. But McClaren isn't a total football manager anyway. Crazy myth.

He might not be, but we won't be punting the ball back to the opposition as much as we did under Pardew.

He doesn't need to be a total football manager to help improve our possession, and reduce the amount of pressure we come under.

Stop being so silly man.

Martinez teams have plenty of possession. They also lose the ball plenty in dangerous situations and concede plenty of goals.

No one said they didn't!

The point is we conceded far more, and a big problem was our total incapability of keeping the ball, and so being under constant pressure.

Are you serious right now?

A lot of last season we actually kept the ball a good bit but just went nowhere with it because we didn't have any creativity

I'd say the biggest reason is because we moved off the ball like a pub team  it's arguably the biggest factor in keeping the ball and creating opportunities for the team if you are actually trying to pass the ball.

I was talking about creating opportunities, the main reason we struggled so much is because we moved off the ball like the players were strangers to each other.

Was the case the entire time with Pardew and continued ( obviously) with Carver.

This. Pardew seemingly paid zero attention to this. The amount of times our players are static, or there's not a single fucker in the penalty area when the ball is out wide is staggering.

I don't want to bash TCD, because I think people go in on the brother too hard on here, but his comments today have confused me greatly.

Come on TCD man, step your game up bro.  :)

We do it because he acts like a know it all constantly, it's not that he's a complete moron or anything more that he thinks he's above everyone else.

It's not exactly the most glowing trait.

Personally I think his comments today have shown, yet again, how erudite he is.

He exists just to create counter positions to every opinion and then spend his time defending it, its fucking pointless. This is a case in point; we say that increased possession and a better passing game might help relieve the defence. What's to disagree with, why would you?

He can't have that though so Martinez is wheeled out of nowhere as if it means anything to Steve McLarens NUFC and we're told in no uncertain terms that organisation is the key, not possession, possession shouldn't be the ultimate aim, because he said so, and no one said it was anyway.

Fuck that.

For me he's still our best CB (given Mbemba is unproven in the Premier League) and it was only his heart and desire I was questioning over last year. Yeah he makes some mental decisions sometimes, but he has certainly shown himself to have the quality in the past. Knowing Ashley this extension maybe even lowered his wage.

Hope him and Mbemba can form a solid partnership. Certainly prefer him as first choice to Willo or Taylor.

Agree with others, until Mbemba proves himself then Coloccini is by far and away our best centre half, which tells its own story these days. I'd have kept him at the club anyway.

More disappointing is that it clearly signals we're not buying anyone else.

This is basically what I've been saying as well, it's not that I particularly think he's fantastic or I want to keep him, but until we buy someone better then I'd rather he was still here. I've no doubt he'll still do well next season, although we really should have been looking to replace him rather than extending his contract.

I don't think my opinion is any different to anyone else's with half a brain.

Aye mate, you're the only one with more than half a brain, McClaren and everyone else is clueless.

Maybe his poor form over the last 12-18 months is also somewhat down to having had his fill of the anti football approach of Pardew and Carver. Perhaps with a new competent coaching setup, a commitment to playing football on the ground and a young hungry CB beside him we could see a rejuvenated Colo who can get back to at least something like his best?

Here's hoping.

Think everyone knew we weren't going to sign 2 centre backs. It takes us 12-18 months minimum to sign one. This is the next best thing even if he's haggard and a bit shit now. Hopefully we can send Williamson to the glue factory now.
