Whether Bale had an off day or whatever, he didn't get much luck against old Ryan. I'd put Santon in right back and play Ben Arfa behind Ba. The 20-year-old feels that the togetherness at St James’ Park puts the team spirit at Inter Milan in the shade and believes that Alan Pardew and his United troopers can only help him become a better player. Santon, who is in contention to start against Wigan Athletic at the weekend after debuting for the black-and-whites against Tottenham Hotspur – can’t wait to star for Newcastle on a consistent basis. And reflecting on the team spirit that has helped him settle in on Tyneside, Santon told the Chronicle: “The team here work in a lot more close quarters than I am used to. Everybody looks out for each other and backs their team-mates up. It is a really great experience for me to be here.” Santon initially moved his parents, who hail from the northern Italian town of Portomaggiore, to stay with him to support him during his early months on Tyneside. But the Italian Under-21 star has settled sufficiently already and said he is enjoying the company of his new friends. The 6ft 2in defender – who Jose Mourhino once described as a “phenomenon” – said: “My parents have gone back home to Italy now. “That’s because I have accustomed to Newcastle very quickly and it is a great experience to be here. “The experience is only something that I feel can get better as the weeks go on.” Santon says he will never forget his debut against Spurs last weekend after coming off the bench and playing his part in the 2-2 draw with the Londoners. Now though, he is focused on Wigan Athletic, saying: “I can’t wait to start my first game. “This is the next logical step for me and it will help me achieve my dream of playing regular football in the Premier League.” Santon will be hoping to make his full bow against the Latics but is vying for one of the full-back positions with Danny Simpson and Ryan Taylor on either side of the defence. Simpson was substituted for only the second time in his United career against Spurs, but has expressed concerns over his future on Tyneside. Whether the full-back retains his place in the starting line-up against Wigan remains to be seen. Yet Santon can’t wait for another slice of action in a Toon shirt. He said: “The magic of the stadium is there for all to see. Even when the team is behind, anything seems possible with the fans we have here. “It is one of the reasons why I decided to come here. Yer same although I think jonas helping him out has been useful for him if pardew is going to make one change for today I rather santon start than Ben arfa mainly because it gives us that plan b if Wigan do frustrate us at home like they have done last few seasons. Any criticism of Pardew for ignoring Santon is just wrong on that basis alone. You may question Simpson specifically in his forward play, but even then it wasn't that bad. Even MoTD did a 2 minute analysis of how strong our defence is, pinpointing how our consistent squad selections are having a strong impact on our defensive play. Well if MOTD say it must be true Do kind of agree, but Santon has more potential than either of our current full backs and he needs to be folded into the team to gain that understanding, I wonder if Pardew's weakness is being too nice to squad players, if he's willing to cause some bother by subbing players. It works wonders for morale, but it's keeping better players on the bench, so there is a trade-off. Santon working on both flanks is good though, keeps everyone on their toes, and as such can be switched around to find out who he works best with.
