Colback actively shafts Anita's chances of having a good game by disappearing off around the pitch, giving Anita the job of corralling the entire central midfield on his own. It's of no surprise when the game passes him by given he's so isolated.

No way is Anita's inadequacies all the fault of Colback. Some folk have a soft spot for Anita, so blame his faults on someone else when in reality he just isn't that great at all.

Didn't say Anita's inadequacies are "all the fault of Colback" by any means, but he's a diminutive midfielder sat in the middle of the park alone, he's got no chance. He has a limited skillset and we don't play to his strengths by a longshot.

If our back four is unchanged when the window slams shut it'll rank as one of Mikes biggest f*** ups, and that's no small achievement.

won't be the fat cunt's fault. the twat has belatedly spunked up a little money for the transfer kitty but he's not picking who we sign. blame the "football board".

Anita has had a few really good games for us, unlike Colback.

Colback has had more good games for us, scored more goals for us, and made more goals than Anita has done. A goal against Brugge, an excellent display against West Ham and a decent hour against Southampton apart, Anita has done the square root of sod all in his time here. He certainly has not "had a few really good games" for us.

Colbacks headless forays into the opposition half will end up with the odd assist and goal. This doesn't make up for his complete lack of positional intelligence that regularly costs us. Or if we're lucky, he'll make a brave Super Stevie block on the line and all the lads will think he's a hero. Ignoring the fact that his leaving of his post is the root cause of most the issues in the first place.

He scores a few goals and occasionally blocks oppositions goal bound shots then so at least he's got a couple of redeeming features to his game. Anita just doesn't do anything. Not a great tackler, passing isn't great, doesn't score goals from midfield, can't impose himself on a game. Just nowt really.

In an ideal world neither would be in our first team but unfortunately both will get plenty of minutes on the pitch this season.

To judge whether a midfielder protects the back four well is to notice how much space we give the opponents just outside the penalty box, and whether opponents can hold up the ball around there.  When Colbacks on the pitch we rarely expose that part whilst Tiote is no where to be seen / Anita give zero pressure to the opponents.  This won't show in highlights and one would not notice this if he just focus on the ball rather than the whole set up.

There is a reason why Colback is highly rated among the industry despite limited physically and, arguably, technically.  He won't offer you spectacular stuff but he is doing the fundamental work well.

Colback more often than not is nowhere to be seen, he certainly does not protect the back four. Although I don't think Anita does a great job of it either BUT it's certainly better than Colback

Not true tbf. Colback will at least put a tackle in and try to unsettle the opposition whereas Anita doesn't even do that. The only thing I would say in Anita's favour is that he will at least try to pick out a more adventurous pass when he has the ball it's just a pity he's not very good at it. Let's face it if we're relying on these 2 as first choice midfielders we're only ever going to amount to bottom half also rans.

  • 2 weeks later...

Wijnaldum & Sissoko is all we've got. I'd let Colback, Anita and Tiote go tomorrow in place of one quality CM and keep Abeid as 4th choice.

And I like Anita fwiw

We could really be doing with someone who is solid defensively, comfortable on the ball and with passing range to sit in front of the back four tbh. Uncfortunately though those players cost loads more than we are willing to pay.

Would have loved Shelvey. He is not a CDM, per se, but an all rounder in Gerrard mode, and surprisingly young. Think we've missed the boat now though.
