They definitely ain’t underpaid like, maybe for the abuse that they get granted but compared to the average upper level worker, hell no.

When you're surrounded by 20-something year olds screaming at you who can buy and sell your family several times over, you're liable to feel underpaid and resentful. It's inviting corruption, is my point.

£70k-£200k per year, plus £1,000 per match.

Plus the last time I checked, it wasn't this much. I think a good year for a top referee including bonuses was £100k, and it can be as low as £50k. Which is neat but nothing amazing in this world. You can make that money selling cheese strings to corner shops.

Given the money in football and when players like Antony are raking in £200k a week, I feel like refs are badly underpaid.

Ben Kitt, the other guy in the video has been suspended from his job.

Also the same article mentions Coote and his 'alleged' comments?

Am I missing something here?

He's admitted the video is real and it's him not a secret twin brother.

I know the media like to protect themselves but there's nothing alleged about this is there?

Are they not referring to the alleged comments he’s made about Liverpool not winning the league/Robertson being a prick/Everton being a shithole to ref at that he apparently told his mates in a WhatsApp chat?

Nope. The article talked about what he said in the Klopp video. Allegedly apparently... 😅

I do a bit of hockey umpiring and while I’m not saying Premier League reffing and upper London league amateur hockey are the same… but yesterday I had a mare and jokingly told a player to “f*** off” after he said I didn’t know the rules right in front of him. I then gave him a lower card after realising I’d overstepped. We laughed about it afterwards, but it made me realise how easy it must be to say something in the moment when players and managers really can be horrible. There’s 22 of them and often most of the stadium might be against you too.

Refs have to make often tough decisions over something that happens very fast in a high pressure environment and are subject to abuse from thousands of people and public scrutiny, in a career that is not long. £70k is not a lot for that in the slightest

Pay them more if they stop being so incredibly shit and inconsistent across the board. They're fucking rubbish.

Again I’m coming from the perspective of a different sport but I find some expectations a bit surprising really. They only see things that happen quickly once and even if you have great eyesight, it’s pretty hard to tell a lot of small things that make a difference - if there’s too much force in contact, if someone got the ball sliding in, what angle someone’s studs were, how ‘unnatural’ a position someone’s hand is. The ref isn’t involved in the play and doesn’t have multiple camera angles and replays. I know VAR has been a nightmare but it’s hardly surprising people think potentially game-changing moments need technology to assist.

Bentancur banned for 7 games for racism against teammate Son

He probably didn't find the comment very funny, but I don't think Son was all that hurt either. He knows he didn't mean to be hurtful. South Americans look at this type of "humour" in a completely different way than us. The FA are probably in the right to do a harsh ban still, if you look at the bigger picture. We don't want to normalize it (or in the case of certain parts of the world where it's already normalized, we want to take a stance against the broader acceptance for it).
