Thought the ref tonight was poor and unable or unwilling to make any real decision. I thought at one point it was going to boil over as he didn't have control but luckily it didn't. His leniency benefitted both teams- I felt Joelinton and Donnarumma were both fortunate not to have been sent off by the end.

Their penalty shout first half is one of those that are never given but should be. Certainly wasn't "out of the ordinary" enough to justify the histrionics from their players or the entire bench who were going mental.

It's a free kick anywhere else on the pitch, and if the ref gave it it wouldn't be overturned, but I was pretty confident VAR weren't giving it.

I think for all it is shite VAR is fairly predictable nowadays in what it will give, there does seem to be some vague coherence to it anyway.

It's the correct decision like, the shot had already been taken. I'm just surprised it wasn't given because the ref was otherwise shite.

I'd have had no complaints if it had been given. Foden has to take the shot early because Schar's diving in. Schar then gets nowhere near the ball and fouls him.

This.

Was expecting it but I did say, straight away, "fuck that, he got his shot away"

Daft things like not booking Gvardiol when he rugby tackled Woltermade were frustrating but, as said, probably went both ways.

Think we got away with one with Schär's tackle (foul, penalty) on Foden in the first half.

I agree, but I think it’s more the VAR than the onfield ref.

It’s one of them where when it happens, your eyes follow the ball a bit, and you don’t really fully see the tackle/foul. But then you see it back on replay and he’s just late and lands on his foot.

Not really sure why the VAR’s not seeing it and getting involved? Never mind, what a shame.

I think he takes the shot because Schär's coming, but it's definitely not his only option. A fully in form or at Home Foden drags it back or cuts inside before scoring imo.

Since I’ve been watching football. They almost never get given. So I’m

not sure they can have many complaints.

Seems to be one most weeks and the commentators give it “he’s done just enough to put him off there.”

Which is usually a foul after the ball has gone

It's a definite foul by Schar and should really be a penalty however it seems to be an unwritten rule that if you get your shot off then it's not given as a penalty

I think I recall Martinelli getting a penalty against Ederson where shot was already played but it's almost never given

I would have been raging if they gave it simply because they almost never be given as penalties

This is my view as well.

It's a penalty ubder the laws of the gane, but it's never ever given so I'd have been livid if they suddenly started giving it against us (like holding on the box at corners I've only ever seen given vs us.)

Certainly wasn't unusual enough to warrant their whole bench going ballistic like they did.
