However, the degree to which they make routine basic judgements that are terrible is absurd. It’s not an easy job and they shouldn’t be subjected to torrents of abuse but it’s hard to let things go when the standard is so poor. They’re talking about finding VAR shit, so are fans. Who the fuck is happy with VAR? I like VAR.

El Prontonise
The rules of football as also mainly subjective so it's all about how that human views the rules and then applies consistency with them.

Kid Icarus
Can only assume it's apathy that no one's raging over Pawson today. Never been more desperate for a ref to retire, he's possibly the worst I've seen alongside Rennie.

Wasn't able to watch it today, but the man's an utter tit and by the sound of the Radio Newcastle commentary it was his standard, nit-picking, turning football into a non-contact sport performance. Equally he was pulling the shirt a bit during the megging and dropped like a stone pretty quickly. If it had been given on the field I don't think it would have been turned over. Equally it probably doesn't meet the "clear and obvious error". So in isolation it's a solid call. It's just that the prick ref has previous with us and teams like Liverpool often seem to get the clear and obvious bit of VAR ignored to their benefit. I hope this is balanced enough. I don't want to turn into an Arsenal fan. The dicks.

The gordon was I would see as a given the issue was the player was attempting to push gordon and ended up falling over with him probably because gordon had decided to go to ground as soon as he felt contact. The ref was just massively inconsistent for both sides that gordon duel 1st half where there player got a yellow for arguing with the ref was poor for them. Likewise the Bruno tackle near their box they didn't get a foul for but Murphy's shot went wide.
Abacus
I originally liked the idea of VAR as it always seemed ridiculous that a clear error could be picked apart on TV while fans at the game were oblivious/fuming. It hasn't been applied consistently and it hasn't come without mistakes of its own. More decisions have been right with it than wrong most likely. But even that has come at a different cost to the flow of the game and every single club's own fans will think it is being applied with bias. I do think semi automated offsides, spotting off the ball fouls, and a referee being able to ask if they aren't sure about something should be worthwhile. As for the rest... this should more be for the fans to decide than the PL. If you can't have perfection, then at least do what the paying public want for the sport. Erikse
Is it really fine to just take a firm grip at his arm an just drag him down when he tries to go past? If so, we should really be doing this all the time, like we would barely concede a goal. Might aswell start allowing handball saves like the Steven Taylor one while we are at it. Yorkie
Yeah, thought the Bruno one was as clear as day. Thought the Gordon one probably was too, but not seen it again. My recollection is that they were both running at pace and Gordon goes down quite easily after feeling a hand on his back, so maybe would've been soft. Bruno one is clear cut though, not sure how you'd argue otherwise. His arms are all over him and he digs his knee into Bruno's thigh. No idea how the ref let it go, regardless of VAR. I would go longer and have automated offsides like the goal line technology. Anyway you cant have people in the VAR room checking offsides with a ruler. Also VAR needs to be black and white, clear and obvious needs to go. Ex. Play on because of what might be a foul, the ref saw it but didnt blow and left it to VAR, VAR will not intervene because refere saw it.

They worry about re-refing the game, so the try to do an in between thing. It gets messy. The ref still has a ton of other decisions to make that won't be checked by VAR. Cf
I didn't mind the ref yesterday. He generally let quite a lot of things go which I think suited us. Surprised me really compared to what I'm used to seeing in Europe. Neither penalty being awarded fitted with that I felt even though either of them could easily have been given.
