Hatem Ben Arfa

I was speaking to someone at the club who said he is, quote 'an arsehole'. Not denying his ability but is he worth it.

It only takes one bad apple

Let's assume for argument's sake that's true. Would anyone diagree that Bellamy isn't an arsehole - and probably a far nastier piece of work that Ben Arfa, let's be honest? Yet Hughes and SBR were able to manage him and use his talent rather than implode like Souness did. Same goes for Cantona and Ferguson for that matter. Does anyone doubt that Cantona wasn't a precious tit?

I actually have more respect for Pardew than that. I think he's a decent man manager, just maybe a bit basic in his football philosophy, and fitting HBA into that will be a challenge.

Pardew says we are going to have a go at spurs this Saturday and have nothing to lose, if that's the case there is no excuse not to start him.

Id like to think he will have to earn his place through good attitude, hard work in training and performances on the pitch just like every member of the squad, nobody in the squad should think they have a guaranteed place in the starting XI as that's when players get complacent.

* Obviously i don't know what he's like in training and he's been fine performance wise on the pitch but in general that should apply to every player.

Think we all might be jumping the gun here.  If when Cabaye and Tiote are back and with Ba and Cisse bedded in, he still can't get a start, then I will start to fear the worst.  That said, Simpson is poor and Santon is very attack minded, so that is probably another reason for him not getting a game out wide.  I actually hope that is the case, as we will upgrade on Simpson in the summer I reckon.  Just hoping it isn't a case of Pardew still thinking Ben Arfa can't/won't play on the wing.

Would like to see him start vs Wolves, they will park the bus and players like HBA will be key, not players like Obertan.

I think it would be pretty clear with Ben Arfa when we face Spurs ..

Since Spurs are an open attacking team by nature, we would be able to find just as much space in their half. Its set up to be an very open game, therefore knowing this if Pardew starts HBA , it would prove that Ben is still in his plans to start eventually but if he start Obertan , then clearly he wants HBA out or clearly dislike him.

Unless we are three or four down HBA will see no game time V Spurs, or at most he'll get a late cameo. I'd expect us to be on the back foot from minute 1. HBA wont do enough to be considered a starter.

ALAN PARDEW has told Hatem Ben Arfa he has to “fight” to win his place back in the Newcastle starting XI.

The United manager has thrown the gauntlet once again to Ben Arfa after the player was dropped for the 2-1 win over Aston Villa.

Instead, Pardew went with James Perch in midfield as he tries to hammer home the point of a hard-working ethic to the French ace.

Pardew told the Chronicle: “Hatem still hasn’t quite grasped, in my opinion, this Premier League. He’s got unbelievable talent, but he’s not used to it.

“He’s got to fight now to get in this team.”

Ben Arfa cut a disappointed figure on the bench after finding himself an unused substitute against the second-city side.

The player went public on his frustrations in January during an in-depth interview with the Chronicle, but since then has sparkled – and then faded – in the first team.

He scored a wonderful solo strike against Blackburn in the FA Cup third round, and pitched in with another cracker in the 5-2 loss to Fulham, a game in which he also laid on the first goal for Danny Guthrie.

Ben Arfa, though, followed up against Brighton with a poor show and was then hooked at half-time at Blackburn in the league, with Perch introduced to shore things up in midfield.

Ben Arfa’s preferred choice is to play as a striker or a second striker, but his chances of getting past Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse would appear limited, while competition for places in midfield is also strong.

But Pardew threw the former Marseilles man a lifeline when he said: “He could still have a massive impact on this season, but we need to see him at his best.

“He isn’t out of the picture yet.”

Ben Arfa has made just five Premier League starts and made eight sub appearances.

The player has scored three times and provided two assists for Pardew’s side in all competitions.

Pardew used the domestic cups to give Ben Arfa a run out on his return from injury.

But with United knocked out of both competitions at the early stages, the remaining 14 league games could well decide the Frenchman’s fate one way or another.

I don't really understand where Pardew is coming from on this. HBA has looked as good if not better than all the other options in his position almost every time he's come on.

Pardew should just admit that he is wedded to a conservative system with two big strikers leading the line and a defensive and hard working midfield. That's fine, it's a valid point, but it's not Ben Arfa's fault.

Getting tired of the cryptic way he speaks about him. Infuriating that Obertan waltzed back in despite providing less in 15 more games and all for what? This doesn't really send out the right message does it? Yeah, be the most productive player we have in January but if you have a bad game, you're out. I thought our players got games fairly, through form? Seems it's a different rule for one.

Don't get it.  He's a better option than Raylor or Obertan on the wings, but he's being told he has to 'fight' for his place, when others can seemingly play shit game after game and still get a start?!?!

This might end up being genius man management from Pardew, I mean he deals with him day in, day out and knows how he responds.  Been a lot of tough love so far, criticism and comments in the press etc.  Maybe he gets a reaction from HBA when he goes public with his views?

If it ends up working then great, just a bit confused by it all TBH and can only see it all ending in tears.

Lol Pardew just isnt a carpet football manager, more of the hoof and cross...end of.

Sick of him playing two face on HBA and us fans regarding good passing football. If it is out of your dept to play good passing football just come out and say it stop this game of lies.

Sorry Ben guess its time for you to find another club that has a manager that appreciates and utilize  you, As a Newcastle Fan, i am sad to see him go, as an individual ,much older than him i think its better for him to move on. Footballer's careers are way too short to be waste around like this. Hope he becomes a world beater at some top club. All the best.

Aye, he's not an advocate of bad football, he is just getting results with a certain system and is reluctant to tinker with it too much. With Tiote and Cabaye feeding Cisse and Ba we will start playing some better football again.

I just wish HBA is part of it, because for me he's the best player we've had for years.

I would fully accept what he says there if Obertan produced Jonas like defensive performances, the truth is, from what i have seen of him, he's naive, weak and bottles challenges when we're not on the ball. He put in one totally out of character challenge near the touchline but there's no been no other instances where I've thought he was doing a good defensive job.

In my opinion, we should be going out looking to win games, especially at home. That means Ben Arfa starts, if Obertan comes on later to provide some more tracking back, then that's logical, but I think Pards is being over-conservative in the Ben Arfa/wing role issue.

TBF to Obertan, he does a couple of mad 60 yard full pelt sprints back per game and against Fulham at home earlier in the season, he put in 3 or 4 quality slide tackles.

But he's hardly consistent in his workrate and is far less effective going the other way than Ben Arfa.  Seems strange that he is the favoured choice out wide.
