Hearing (unconfirmed) that Newcastle may have stepped up their interest in Blackburn's Junior Hoillet.

Not sure why Hoillet has not been snapped up yet. Begs the question?

Because he's a greedy c*** who thinks he's better than he is?

Just a possibility.

And we know this how?

I think he'd be a great signing. Full of potential going forward. If he signs, he'd need to buy into our mentality. If Ben Arfa could do that, surely Hoilett can.

Playing away from home and hitting teams on the counter with Cabaye supporting Hoilett, Cissé and Hatem is frightening.

Magpies expecting plenty more transfer activity

9:09am Wednesday 11th July 2012 in Sport By Paul Fraser, Chief Football Writer

NEWCASTLE UNITED could spring a surprise in the transfer market once again this summer if manager Alan Pardew gets his way.

Pardew's No 2 John Carver last night insisted the Magpies are busy trying to add to the squad before the start of next season.

Newcastle have already added Frenchman Romain Amalfitano and Coventry's Gael Bigirimana but are still actively looking to strengthen.

Twente's Brazilian defender Douglas and Lille's Mathieu Debuchy are high in their thoughts, although attempts to land Dutch striker Luuk de Jong appear to be over.

In the past Newcastle have sprung a surprise on the transfer front, with the likes of Papiss Cisse, Yohan Cabaye and Cheik Tiote all arriving under the radar.

And Carver thinks there is still a chance that could happen again.

“We are a football club that does our business in private. Last year, nobody knew about any of the players coming in and that will remain the same,” he said.

“There is work going on, indeed it’s been going on since the last transfer window closed, if not before. So everyone is working hard behind the scenes.

“We have a great set-up, Graham Carr (chief scout) signed an eight-year deal so he’s tied down for a long time now, so everyone is working extremely hard to get everything together.

“We have targets we will try to reach. It’s a work in progress.”

Amalfitano and Bigirimana are already training with the Newcastle squad having been signed from Reims and Coventry respectively.

Neither are expected to step immediately up to the first team stage, although Carver thinks there will be an onus on some of the younger members of the squad to figure – particularly following Europa League qualification.

He said: “We are already feeling good as a group. We have two young boys who have joined us – Gael and Romain – and they have fitted in very well. They have been made welcome and they don’t look out of place. “Gael is the younger one, but he’s played 26 games in the Championship with Coventry so he is probably a bit ahead of Romain. We will take it easy with him, but he’s impressed over a couple of days.

“We do have some other good kids at the club. Sammy Ameobi did really well last season until he got injured, and there is Shane Ferguson, Mehdi Abeid, Haris Vukic who all need to stake a claim for the squad and in the team.

“Those guys have to be knocking on the manager’s door what with all the football that we could play. If we get through the Europa League qualifying round then there is going to be an awful lot of games to play.

“The lads have got to step up to the plate. They have a season of Premier League experience under their belts now, being put in the team now and again.”

Expectations will undoubtedly rise following last season's fifth place finish in the Premier League under Pardew.

If Newcastle – who have offloaded Peter Lovenkrands, Fraser Forster, Leon Best, Danny Guthrie and Alan Smith permanently - are to build on that then Carver thinks keeping hold of their key players could be crucial.

He added: “We were disappointed with that last game against Everton when we lost last season, but you look at the season as a whole and you have to say it was fantastic for the football club.

“We set a high standard and we want to maintain that standard. That’s going to be difficult. Fans ask ‘can we go one better? Than finishing above Liverpool and Chelsea next season?' Only time will tell on that one.

“Obviously we would like to keep everybody and so far we have. Hopefully that will be the same when the season gets going plus one or two additions.”

Said before i'd take Hoilett but there's more important transfers to make than him this summer IMO. As long we get what i would consider the "priorities" it's all good, but i wouldn't want us to chase Hoilett and miss out on other targets which are needed much more.

Pretty good chance we'll get Hoilett IMO. Exactly our kind of signing, unless the wages are silly.

I'm hearing he wants about £50k a week with £1m agents fee.  The tribunal fee could be about £5m so it could be a bit too rich for us.

I really wouldn't be surprised if we buy Hoilett, then it's as Best's replacement. Completely different type of player, but if we are playing the way Pardew keeps alluding to then he will probably fill Best's gap in the squad.

Can play wide and central, after Pardew mentioned about copying Spain it really wouldn't surprise me. If Ba and Cisse went to afcon we used Hoilett in a false 9 role.

Would be a complete turn-around from the beginning of last season but it wouldn't surprise me.

Don't see anything there that would be too rich for us.  The wages are maybe on the upper scale of what we're prepared to pay these days, but the fee's if true shouldn't be any problem at all.

I'd love us to sign Hoilett simply for the reason (or I hope anyway) it gives us more flexibility in the way we play and should encourage us to go 4-3-3 quite a bit again next season. Totally baffling why we went back to 4-4-2 in some of the games last season. Especially as Ben Arfa's threat was nullified as whenever he gets in the ball in a 4-4-2 he's too deep to cause as much as damage as we know he's capable of.

Fee's wont be an issue, but the wages if the reports are true will be. If he wants 50k he can GTFO really, no chance in hell of us paying him that.

At least at first anyway, he would have to prove himself to get that sort of cash.

He'd be a direct replacement for Best going forward but with a more favourable system to most of our players.
