The idiotic smog addled mackem who wrote this bilge says "the close-up of the sobbing fat Geordie has become one of the iconic images in the modern game."

Yeah, right-o you daft forgetful c***!

:D

TBF it was the national press that pushed this image, and a certain London-based Man U fan in particular. Jim White I believe his name is, in the late 90's when it was thought we may be a rival for Man U (God forbid) he even pushed it to the level where he wrote a book "50 things ruining football, and "weeping geordies" was one of them.  He is one of those "My family came from Manchester" w*nkers.

how about some independent views on Sunderland as a place.....http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1884932.

I go to Sunderland uni  (:pilko:) but travel from Newcastle every day and I know loads of people that do. In general if people from outside the area want to go on a night out or out shopping they'll come through to Newcastle, it's only really the locals that try and tell everyone nightlife in Newcastle is s***. In my 3rd year now and I've been out in Sunderland a grand total of 3 times, it is appauling.

There is a reason i'd never been over to Sunderland before I started uni  You can just tell the whole place is on its arse, the centre is far closer to Wallsend or Shields highstreet than Newcastle, it really is a dive.

I went to Northumbria Uni (well, it was Newcastle Poly at the time).

My best mate up there was a mackem, from Cleadon. We went over to his parents house a few times. Now, that's a particularly posh area, so I assumed most of Sunderland was relatively pleasant (like Newcastle). Then we went into the centre, and I rapidly re-evaluated.

This was 1989, though, I would imagine it has improved a lot since then.

It'll just be like everywhere with some nice parts and some not so nice. The centre is still mostly bollocks though, they've got the Bridges which is a new shopping centre but all the shops are tiny. It's like something off The Wicker Man walking round at times, but then again so is outside The Black Garter
