English European Competition Qualification 2011/12 - Updated 04/04/12

1st    Champions League Group Stage (currently Manchester United)

2nd    Champions League Group Stage (currently Manchester City)

3rd    Champions League Group Stage (currently Arsenal)

4th    Champions League Third (Final) Qualifying Round (currently Tottenham)

5th    Europa League Third (Final) Qualifying Round (currently Chelsea)

League Cup Winners    Europa League Qualifying. (Liverpool) If winners achieve Qualification via League Position this slot goes to the highest placed team not qualified via other means.

FA Cup Winners            Europa League Qualifying. If winners achieve Qualification via League Position the runners-up will take their place in Europa League. If both have achieved qualification via League Position the slot goes to the highest placed team not qualified by other means.

How can NUFC get in to Europe? **UPDATED**

Champions League:

NUFC Finish in the top 4. Unlikely. Less unlikely than before, but still pretty unlikely.

Europa League:

NUFC Finish 5th

NUFC win FA Cup

NUFC reach FA Cup Final but lose to Champions League Qualified Team

Everton fail to make the FA Cup Final and NUFC finish 6th

Everton fail to make the FA Cup Final and NUFC finish 7th but Liverpool finish 6th or higher. (Shouldn't need this one now  ;D)

If Everton DO make it to the cup final we want there opponents (Tottenham or Chelsea) to finish OUTSIDE the Champions League Qualifying position.

The current understanding is that should Chelsea win the Champions League and finish outside the top 4 they will take the 4th CL Qualifying place. The team finishing in 4th will be given a place in the Europa League, this will be in addition to the 3 Europa League places awarded to England.

If I've missed anything, and I probably have, feel free to let me know.

Updated OP, if anything is wrong feel free to ridicule me.

So...

  • We want Liverpool to beat Everton and Chelsea to beat Tottenham in the FA Cup.
  • Chelsea to beat Benfica, but lose to Barca in Champions League. (The more congested their schedule the better)
  • Manchester United to win the title ASAP, so that Man City have nothing to play for in the penultimate game. Also, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Everton to lose whenever possible. Liverpool and Sunderland to lose (just because) unless they are playing a team above Newcastle in table

if liverpool beat everton does it really matter to us who wins the FA cup if we finish 6th or above ?

Nope. As long as it's a Liverpool-Spurs/Chelsea FA Cup Final (and we finish 6th), we qualify for the Europa League.

I mentioned this the other day, how do we qualify for Europe? The winner of the FA Cup final goes right into the group stages. Does the FA Cup spot still mean the group stages if it goes back to the league?

Decky, looks like it's this.....

This article from Premier League was published half way through this season so should confirm it's same as last season and Chronicle stuff was bollocks.

http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/features/european-competition-qualification.html

Every season, the 20 Barclays Premier League clubs compete against each other in a bid to win the title. But as well as vying for domestic success, they are also battling to win places in the two major European competitions, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. We outline the ways in which clubs competing in the Barclays Premier League can qualify for these two competitions.

UEFA Champions League

The teams that finish in the top four places in the Barclays Premier League qualify for the UEFA Champions League. The top three qualify automatically for the Group Stage, and the fourth-placed team must play a Qualification Play-Off. English winners of the UEFA Champions League who finish outside the top four places go through as Winners to the Group Stage along with the domestic champions, runners-up and third-placed team. No extra domestic place can be gained by winning the UEFA Champions League, so the team finishing fourth drops into the UEFA Europa League. Then, the national association of the title-holder is entitled to one additional place in the UEFA Europa League.

UEFA Europa League

There are three places available in the UEFA Europa League:

The FA Cup winners will enter at the Group Stage

The fifth-placed team in the Barclays Premier League will enter at the Play-Off stage

The Carling Cup winners will enter at the Q3 stage

In the event The FA Cup winners also qualify for the UEFA Champions League, The FA Cup runner-up will qualify for the UEFA Europa League, but in the place reserved for the lowest ranking Barclays Premier League representative.

The place with direct access to the Group Stage will be given to the club that finishes in the highest position in the Barclays Premier League of the clubs qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

If an English team wins the UEFA Europa League they will enter the next season's competition at the Group Stage, gaining an extra domestic place only if they fail to qualify through other means for either of the two European competitions. If the holders of the UEFA Europa League have already qualified for Europe, no extra domestic place will be gained.

If The FA Cup winners, runners-up (if applicable) and the Carling Cup winners have already qualified for Europe, their place goes to the next best placed clubs in the Barclays Premier League.

Dear Premier League,

I am emailing to ask how Newcastle United can qualify for the Europa League. I am sure of the following:

If a) NUFC finish 5th

b) NUFC finish 6th or 7th and the FA Cup final is Liverpool v Chelsea/Spurs (assuming theyre in europe already).

But, if Chelsea win the FA cup and finish 5th, they qualify via the FA Cup and the league. Now I know the spot usually goes to the FA Cup runners up (if Everton or sunderland), but in this case, would it go to the league spot? I'm basing this on the fact that the FA Cup spot goes into the competition proper, whereas the league spot goes into the qualifier. Is it therefore correct to assume the FA Cup spot essentially 'pulls rank' on the league spot, with Chelsea then taking the cup spot and the league spot going down a place? Many thanks.

The reply:

Thanks for your email.

It is our understanding from the guidelines set by UEFA that in the event the FA Cup winners are qualified for the european competition, the FA Cup runners up will qualify, but in the place reserved for the lowest ranking PL representative. The place with direct access to the group stage will be given to the club that finishes in the highest position in the PL of the clubs qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.

English winners of the UEL will enter at the Group stage, gaining an extra domestic place only if they fail to qualify through other means for UCL or UEL. If the holders of the UEL have already qualified for Europe, no extra domestic place will be gained.

Should the FA Cup winners, runners-up (if applicable) and the Football League Cup winners already have qualified for Europe, their place goes to the next best placed clubs in the Premier League.

We recommend that you contact UEFA for clarification.

Kind regards,

Not even sure what they're on about in the second paragraph.

If an English team wins the Europa League. If they've already got European qualification through domestic competition, then they just go into the group stages and no extra place is given. However, if they haven't qualified through domestic competition they effectively get given a 4th Europa League spot. Assuming it's stolen from some Lithuanian team or something.

That's absolutely nowt to do with what I asked them though, and it's irrelevant because there's no English team left in the competition!

Perfect body position to perform the required task. One foot forward, knees slightly bent, back straight then dip and drive. No danger to his jam doughnuts there. #toomuchhealthandsafetytraining

Nice of the FA to send out that useless reply. Connecting with the fans(!)

So we should ask UEFA for clarification? The thing is, the Chronicle have already "called" UEFA for such a purpose and what they were essentially "told" is that if Everton get to the FA Cup final, we won't qualify for the Europa League......

I've got a mate who works for UEFA, though not in the right area, so asked him. He got in touch with someone who basically said the rules haven't been officially published yet, he's pretty certain they haven't changed from last season (so that would mean CL qualifiers would have to win cup) but the bloke who runs the Europa League is on holiday!

He said he'll ask him when he gets back.

Nice one. Please let us know when you hear something! :)
