Newcastle United 1 - 0 Norwich - 18/3/12 - post-match reaction from page 35

Horrible 2nd half, and predictable as fuck. I can't believe Pardew closed the shop AGAIN. After he actually put out a positive line up which created some movement. Ben Arfa off again, probably wont start the next game. Bullshit. Cissé off, why? Shola did ok, fair enough but no need to take Cissé off. Perch and Guthrie carried the team. Feel disappointed, which speeks volumes after a much needed win. I don't see how this plan is gonna work against better teams. Norwich looked a very average team with no real threat, but because we sat back like dicks again they thrived on it. You don't say. Also, Williamson should be 4th choice at the very best next season, and Simpson likewise.

Ben Arfa should've come off, imo: looked knackered and clueless. Guthrie was shot, as well. And Shola has bright in his sub appearances. Subs are about the only things Pardew actually got right.

If Norwich had gone for it from the start they would have got something and maybe even won the game. In the 2nd half we looked frightened, tired and out of ideas. Strangely it was Shola who steadied the ship with some good holdup play. Ba's first touch has gone to shit for some reason.

Here's my take.

I think we tried to play carpet football for a period today. But Norwich's pressing game put us under pressure after we took the lead. There were a lot of triangles happening in tight spaces, but Norwich got in Guthrie and especially Cabaye's face and got a lot of joy. This is the kind of game we should be looking for Cabaye to dictate but lately he seems to be struggling with the intensity of the games. I'd rest him if we had any other viable option. As our midfield ceded more and more possession and territory we went longer and longer. I was delighted to see Ameobi which says it all.

Having two guys at the back who treat the ball like a grenade is killing us as well.

Also, Norwich are not a bad side and we are not as far ahead of them squad-wise as we'd like to think.

Its very easy to blame everything on Pardew but I think our players look knackered an low on confidence at the moment.

Agree with this. As easy as it is to blame Pardew there a few players underperforming which is not necassarily down to the way Pardew is setting us up to play. It is hard to play a controlling, possession style all game when we have players such as Williamson and Simpson who simply don't have the technical ability or composure to do it.

Well that was a lucky win if there ever was one. We started loosing it after Williamson fucked it up early in the first half, after that we just seem to loose it and just hoof the ball up front. Before that we were playing it on the deck nicely which was opening up Norwich and created that superb goal from Cisse. With out doubt it was Krul who won the game for us with fantastic stopper he saved from Whitbread otherwise it had a draw written all over it, if he scored.

Well, I think you should keep your biggest threat on the pitch. His presence causes chaos, especially when he carries the ball. I realize it's a bit much at times, but he's able to score out of the blue.

Yep agree with all of that, good posts.

Shocking performance. There was very little effort and we were playing with fear, for some reason. An awful, turgid match, it was almost identical to the match against QPR.

Ffs little effort!? Can't you realize how hard we press them at 1st half? Rematch the match you fucking idiot.

Coincides with many of my thoughts

Good post.

Regarding Cabaye needed a rest, I have tended to agree with this, thinking he needed a game or two off since October/November. However he has now had that rest, but it still hasn't done much good.

I think he is struggling because he has become one of our dangermen, and teams are being more defensive against us than at the start of the season. The team need to adapt, or Cabaye needs to improve in high intensity, low space situations. I also think that explains why he is coming deep a lot.

Slightly better and great we didn't conceed, yeah appalling performances but hopefully we'll get better

Krul - 8 - His saves second half were absolutely crucial

Simpson - 4 - Poor

Williamson - 4 - Accident waiting to happen

Colo - 7 -  Solid, one mistake nearly cost us so doesn't get highe

Jonas - 8 - Best performance for a while

HBA - 6 - tough one to mark as again when on the ball looks dangerous, but not great going back, still carries more threat than anyone else in team apart from Cisse

Cabaye - 5 - Not great but actually better, hopefully on right track to be good again soon

Guthrie - 6 - Kept us ticking fine

Perchelele - 7 - Well done, if he keeps going this way he'll get hyped as the next Scott Parker and get slightly overrated for being solid defensibly and able to pass it a bit

Cisse - 7 - If this is him struggling to adapt I look forward to him adapting, should have had more but got us the win

Ba - 4 - COME BACK BA WE NEED YOU

Santon - 6 was good actually no complaints

Strola - 6 - bleh didn't do much good nor bad

Gosling - didn't do enough/get enough time to get a score

He was frustrating today but not his best. It was a weird sub, but he was among our sloppiest in possession today. We desperately needed some wing play to involve our two strikers, would have been better off playing 1 up top if we were going to leave them isolated. However Shola was perfect when he came off spreading the play our wide and holding the ball up.

Delighted and relieved with three essential points but Christ, it was an incredibly turgid and negative second half. When Ben Arfa and then Cisse's numbers went up, you could have driven a Ford Escort into my mouth I was that gobsmacked.

It's a good post with some valid points but this has been going on all season. The problem is Pardew doesn't seem to know how to set up a shape to suit the players we've got and we end up looking disjointed and confused in most games we play. You can't blame it on injuries all season.

Thought Cabaye was one of our best player today, he was at the back supporting when we were defending and bombing forward when we were going forward, most of our play was coming from him. Also thought Perch had a solid game

Well, we got the win but what another rotten performance. This team seem to have been regressing since we beat Man United just after new year and that concerns me. Again, too many long balls and a lack of cohesion and good passing/ball retention in midfield. Where the hell is this pacier, more dynamic side that Pardew promised us last season?

Our gameplan seems at the moment to be stop the opposition playing and then that's it. No intent to try and push on and to win games convincingly.

Worried!

Well a win is a win. Nonetheless what bothered me the most was the complete lack of urgency when we were on the ball. As soon as Norwich put some pressure on us, especially when donkeys like Williamson and Simpson were on the ball, we completely panicked. Tim Krul is no better on the ball than those two aforementioned by the way. There seems to be absolutely no ability to keep the ball within the team at all and that is very very worrying and frustrating when we have such talented offensive players in the team. We were at home, we didn't create many chances, we let Norwich(ffs) come at us and have a field day and we showed no intention to keep the ball.

Three cheap points today but boy there is something wrong with the mentality within the team and the philosophy Pardew is deploying.

First fifteen minutes, we were playing it on the deck even Krul was passing on the deck. It was when Williamson made that horrific cock up which nearly cost us a goal. After that we started hoofing it up.

Well, that was turgid. No wonder uncle Alan has us hoofing the ball about as he obviously sees Williamson with the ball at his feet every day in training and thinks..get rid.

Anyway, at least we did try to play on the deck today to begin with in what started as a sort of 4-3-3, but it just seemed a bit lopsided. We then took off our pace and put Shola on the wing so I guess if that was plan B it's a miracle we've won today, although other than a 10 minute spell in the second half we were never really under the cosh too much.

Krul - Some good saves, the Whitbread header stands out but thankfully it was right at him. Kicking a bit erratic, as usual.

Simpson - Not awful but didn't do, well, anything really. Probably should have had a pen for the cross that the defender palmed behind.

Jonas - We missed him going forward, did ok defensively.

Colo - Steady

Williamson - Nerves look shot, not helped by him dallying on the ball for what felt like 30 seconds which led to Norwich's only chance of the half.

Perch - Man of the match for me, got stuck in well and kept it simple.

Guthrie - Showed for the ball plenty, not a bad performance

Cabaye - Fairly anonymous, grafted as you'd expect.

Ben Arfa - Never quite on his game, made some horrible decision in our own half which nearly cost us.

Ba - Some decent link up play first half, hardly had a sniff second half. Was very deep at times, and raced back about 70 yards to cover for Ben Arfa after HBA and Simpson managed to give the ball away when stood next to each other, which was nice to see.

Cisse - Great finish, could have had a few more too.

Shola - Good hold up play, cameos like this I can live with.

Gosling - Meh

Santon - Solid when he came on I thought.

Very similar to the QPR game as some have said only we had a few more chances, a wins a win but we've got to pick it up over the coming weeks.

Same. They must be wondering what they have to do to get a solid run at this club.

Thought the build-up to the goal, and the goal itself, was some of the best carpet football we've played in donkeys, and gave an indication of how effective it can be. We were hoofing the ball from Krul's arms again within about 5 minutes.

NUFC are a shambles sometimes. The Muamba support on the electronic boards said 'your' instead of 'you're'

Along the lines of 'Your in our thoughts'.

Apart from that turgid affair, rode our luck once again and just looked shit.

Horrendous that. Hope someone got a slap and/or lost their job.
