remember how man city bossed us in midfield at the end of the season, cabaye and tiote just couldn't get a foothold against them....hope this is pards looking to put a nice little system in place with 2 strong CM's/DM's who can both play and retain possession thus allowing cabaye in particular more freedom to get on the ball higher up the pitch

Signing another specialist defensive midfielder makes a lot of sense if we're planning on playing Ba and Cisse up top but still accomodating Ben Arfa. Definitely need to upgrade Simpson though if that's the case.

Cheers nufc54, aye, could be on the right Beren but I'd be surprised. By all accounts Anita is average at LB, raylor can't do LB and Ferguson is either not ready/injured too often so I'd say unlikely for the time being

Happy with this like, RB is a bigger priority but that'll come. We had confirmation of the agreed fee? Between 6m-8m pounds?

Or maybe Santon is going to the right?

By all accounts Anita is a CM.

Can play left back in a pinch but it'd be a real waste of his talents making that his primary position.

I said it a few weeks ago but as soon as we make one first team signing in a position that needs strengthening, the whole situation will suddenly look absolutely miles better. I'm still hopeful on Debuchy, and strikers will likely become available towards the end of the window when teams start to buy players.

Never thought of that to be honest, just assumed we would be going 4-3-3, his signing would allow us to get the best out of everyone.

Seriously man, we have to play 4-3-3, don't we?!

In theory not necessarily, it should be the system we use but we could also play 4-3-1-2 with Hatem behind Ba and Cisse but give him the freedom to move across the front line and use fullbacks to provide extra width.

I quite like Jonas at LB actually. Santon right.

Anita would let us play Cabaye in a more advanced role and with one striker. Hence, we dont need a new striker as much as before, a new one would still be preferable though.

Maybe.

Hope it's not a flat 4-4-2 in any case, it's not really a great system for the players we have.

Don't think Jonas has looked great at fullback any time he's been there, out of position a lot.

in fact i'm very excited by this proposition as it would suggest pards knew cabaye was being weighed down with defensive duties at times last season, perhaps anita and bigi as backup are there to right that?  be great to see cabaye/cisee/hba playing high up and causing havoc

Good points. Plus Pards has said previously he'd love a utility player who could go into afew positions. I don't remember which player he used as an example....might have been John o'Shea but regardless it's good to have. Just look at the role Perch played last season and he's not the most gifted.

Or a 4-2-3-1 with Cabaye centre attacking, Ben Arfa right attack and Ba left attack

I would prefer that also but Pardew seems to have promised Ba a central role this year.
