Tiresias Posted July 13, 2012 Share Posted July 13, 2012 I actually think football has moved on a bit since allardyce's bolton days or whatever and don't think he'll be able to grind things out as well as used to, that said Stoke manage it I suppose. I still tip them to have a terrible start and allardyce to get sacked and end up with sven or something. Know it sounds partisan and it would be a shame to not have the derby but can see Sunderland on a relegation death spiral, not most likely I know but the MON bump has officially gone, it's not a good squad, his transfers won't help and can see them struggling. Aston Villa have another terrible squad but Lambert is good enough to keep them up I think but real candidates for me. Stoke as well, they were a bit found out last season too. Have to wait and see with Swansea, depends on how well Laudrup does, may be great, they may fall apart a bit. QPR too, doubt their signing spree will help, only contribute to their lack of cohesiveness. Southampton and Reading should do fine tbh, run well enough to be lower mid table. Swansea I think will regress slightly but not enough for them to go down. Swansea tapered off quite comfortably as the season progressed, possibly because they got (partly) found out. How much did they finish with, 44 points? Brendan gone ( even if he isnt the messiah bin dips make him out to be) and gylfi gone + possibly others - a slight regress can quickly get them into the mud. Not only that Archie, but nobody knows how the current squad will take to Laudrup (he's fond of falling out with people) and how well he will adapt to the Premiership in general, so you'd have to say there are at serious risk. It would be interesting if a third European competition was brought back, and like in rugby, every team except the bottom 3 won a place in one (which competition depending on where they finished). Could see the likes of West Ham, Norwich, WBA, Southampton, QPR, Wigan and Stoke take a good beating from similar placed teams in other countries. Swansea too are another good shout, just can't see Laudrup being a success there. I'm not sure how often this happens, I would imagine though it's very rare, but last year none of the promoted sides were relegated, surely the same thing can't happen again ? So one of the West Ham, Southampton or Reading to go. Fat Sam sides don't get relegated, so that removes West Ham, Reading are investing well in players that can keep them up, so I just think Southampton could be the unlucky ones, although wouldn't surprise me if the had a season like Swansea or Norwich did last year. I remember his enthusiasm when Scunthorpe were playing Man City in the FA Cup third round, his interview was absolutely delightful. Happens every year. If we go down this year, I'm questioning whether or not we should stick with Pardew. I still have a bit of faith in him, especially as he effectively had the rug pulled from under him in the winter transfer window. And like yourselves, injuries played their part. He is a disgusting, fat grinder who picks up undeserved points but I was one of the few/many (I can't remember what the consensus was at the time) that thought he would have taken us down had Keegan not taken over Totally agree with you, we were heading quickly in that direction. They didn't get rid of Grant a couple of years ago and ended up going down as a result. They've learnt their lesson imo. I'll happily stick a few quid on Allardyce being gone by Christmas though. Contenders this year have got to be: Stoke West Brom Norwich Possibly QPR and Swansea, but they'll have enough to stay out of it unfortunately.
