Ginola
We won this corresponding fixture last season with 4-4-2 Against a weakened chelsea side thinking about two massive cup finals. The point is we've proven that we can play well with a 4-4-2. Before Cisse, Ben Arfa etc etc came a massive part of the side..... not one thing about it works. Cisse scored 2 in the corresponding fixture when we were playing 4-4-2 last season...
johnnypd
Anyone still wondering why Pardew wants Carroll? Was obvious the moment he went for De Jong tbh, and is a tad depressing.
mouldy_uk
When you're giving the ball away as badly as we are you're asking for trouble. What have this lot actually been working on in pre season? Their suntans? Gotta agree with this, lot of our players really don't look very sharp at all. I appreciate they need a few games to get full match fitness but that's the same for all the other teams. Mr. Snrub
Surprisingly, Simpson has looked alright After Tavernier's performance on Thursday any cunt could have looked like Cafu. But ye, he's been dead on.
Cronky
Anita looks like he's not used to the pace of the Premiership yet. Unsurprisingly. Ba and Cisse don't give us enough pace and movement for 4-4-2 to work away from home. The system also means that Ben Arfa has to hang back a bit to help out Simpson. He's done a brilliant job with the scraps of possession that have come his way and we need to get him into more advanced positions.
oldtype
At the end of the day there's just no shame in being comprehensively outplayed and defeated away to a team who will probably be challenging for the title.
Mick
It's no good people mentioning that we won last season with 4-4-2, we're playing today and we could do with an extra body in the middle.
Mike
At the end of the day there's just no shame in being comprehensively outplayed and defeated away to a team who will probably be challenging for the title. heero
not bad, just we need to get at them more 2_0 well we don't need to get the points here, but still we have given them way to much time we'll see what the 2nd half brings have to do something, can't just sit back now, have to try and get one back can we afford to? if we push high torres will get in behind a lot (and hazard of course). managers hate being in this kind of position

Yes i know but both goals had nothing to do with system..... 1 was Santon running down the wing and passing to Cisse and he scores an outstanding goal the other was that ridiculous goal from a throw in. 4-4-2 limits Cabaye and Ben Arfa's influence, makes us more vulnerable defensively etc etc and that's without mentioning the fact that Ba and Cisse as a 2 clearly don't work. I have no idea why people keep defending 4-4-2 it's clearly inferior in every way and everytime we use we are crap by comparison. Everytime Pardew changes to 4-3-3 from 4-4-2 during a match and how much we improve should be enough to confirm this.

BONTEMPI
When you're giving the ball away as badly as we are you're asking for trouble. What have this lot actually been working on in pre season? Their suntans? I think you can see a change in our style. We're trying to play it from the back and we can get the ball around half way but we're struggling to pass it incisively in the final third. Ba and Cisse have their backs to goal and there's no clever runs from Jonas or HBA to get the ball in space. Yes we are not hoofing it as much, but as you correctly point out the midfield is giving it away cheaply. Really need Ben Arfa in behind the front 2 2nd half Cabaye Jonas Anita Ben Arfa Ba Cisse Either way we have everything to gain so just go for it
Dyeyzzon
Anyone still wondering why Pardew wants Carroll? So far, I have... - He's accepted that Ba and Cisse do not work well together and need a support player in the form of a younger target man like Shola. - Maintain his 4-4-2 because that shape bodes well for hoofball, which Carroll will profit in. (Not what I want) - Put on a smug troll face on Liverpool for basically gifting us money to build a top half side. - Gain another body to solve our depth crisis in attack. - He might dominate foreign teams in Europe with his power. KaKa
honestly the 4-4-2 bashing on here is so OTT, we really havn't been that bad It's not about being bad. We haven't looked awful or anything, but the strikers just aren't in the game, and Cabaye and Anita are seemingly being forced to play longer passes from deep a lot of the time. Unfortunately, neither of the strikers is really adept at receiving and maintaining possession of these types of balls too. Just feel we'd be a lot more threatening going forward if setup differently. Much like we were second half of the last match. They even highlighted this in the studio at the start. So when we play well in a 4-4-2 it is despite the system and when we play well in 4-3-3 it is because of the system? Hard to argue against that. No, there isn't as long as you give it a good go but we're failing to do what even fucking wigan managed last week and that's to threaten them. Mick
then that just lets them exploit more space down the wings, this chelsea team would have a field day if we left our full backs exposed. Mistle17
Haven't been overly impressed with Chelsea, tbh. Bar Hazard, Mata and Torres they don't look unstoppable. We've seriously lacked any intensity and attacking instinct. We've got to score first (and soon) to stand a chance.
oldtype
Should also be noted that the way we played in the first half isn't even all that different from 4-3-3 in the first place. Ben Arfa was practically living in the middle of the pitch.

Last season's victory doesn't even really count imo. All of the Chelsea players had only one thing on their minds when we played them, i.e. the CL final a few weeks later.
