Set Pieces

Both the delivery and the routine needs sorting out. Even if we do settle on someone who can take a really good corner, it's so predictable where the ball would end up, that being the tallest centre back we have.

Some routines which I think would make for a good rotation would be...

1. Sending it to the tall striker at the near post (Shola/Ba) who'd either poke it in or flick it onto an instinctive goalscorer like Papiss. The tall striker has to be running toward a ball being curled towards the goal.

2. The short corner played to a fullback, who passes back to Hatem, who then dribbles his way to either cross or force a defender to take him out for a penalty. (Spurs game)

3. The odd one aimed to the outside of the box to be met by Colo's curls (Wigan away 2 seasons ago :coloccini:) or someone who can strike the ball. (Anita/Cabs/Tiote :anguish:)

4. Hit it long and aim it to the other side of the pen box, where someone can claim it to hit a dangerous low cross when everyone's dragged out. (Ba's set-up for Cisse in the first half of the Villa game)

The tallest man tactic is just used far too often that it gets too predictable for other teams to defend against us. A bit of variation, coupled with a bit of kicking practice would really be needed as we keep winning these corners week in week out only to absolutely waste them.

Set pieces (corners in particular) are generally overrated as goalscoring opportunities. It is amazing how many sets of fans will say that their team is terrible at them. I think the way inwhich they are built up compared to how often goals come from them there is a huge disparity - across the sport as a whole  - which leads to people thinking their side are shit at them.

That said I do think we are particularly poor, both in our execution and the players we have that are dangerous from them. May as well just go short rather than spunk them away. I can't stand the long floated free-kick towards the keeper in particular.

Our set-piece success is nothing to do with the people taking them. As someone said, they are far too predictable.

The reason we had some success two years ago, is because we mixed them up. Barton would launch one to the back post or float one in the middle. We also had Carroll and Nolan who were dynamite.

We need to work on our routines and come up with something special. Pardew mentioned it in his post match didn't he?

Never quite sure why the home crowd gets so excited when we win in a corner.

Tedious and predictable.

In our area we just predict how shit the corner will be.  I usually beg for it to miss the 1st man.

Cabaye's corners have been shit since he signed.

Also, however bad you are at set pieces, scoring ONE headed goal over the course of 12 months is just unbelievable.

We don't even look remotely threatening when set pieces are put into the box as well.

Always remember watching us play at Highbury under Keegan when Arsenal beat us 2-0.  They used exactly the same corner routine for each goal - corner to near post, flick on by Steve Bould, someone to then bundle it home.

If we can't get it over the first man, maybe we should try this..

Or make sure the first man is one of our chaps. :)

Aye the near post flick on would work well with us imo. Probs a more recent example to that...

We still have Ameobi and instinctive goalscorers as well. :shifty:

The set-plays were awful. The delivery - we hit the first man five times. That's why for a coach, it was frustrating. We were really frustrated that we weren't hitting the areas. We are not brilliant at corners - our record suggests we haven't got great assets to score from corners. Williamson has never scored since he has been here; Steven (Taylor) has only got two or three; Colo hasn't got many goals. We are not proficient, and maybe we have to re-think about how we are going to score from set-plays.

It's weird. Except for maybe under Hughton, our set plays have been shocking for years. Through a whole host of managers, coaches and players. I remember Emre's in particular being atrocious.

I can't understand professional footballers - any, nevermind so called set-piece specialists - being unable to clear the first man from a corner like.

Me either, apart from Robert (as mentioned before). He still frustrated me but at least you know when he got it right it was one hell of a corner. Now we seem pathetic, fair enough we don't have a Shearer/Sir Les on the end but we seem unable to either put it in a decent area or put it in with enough pace to cause problems from either own goals or one of our players making a significant touch to make it unstoppable.

I don't understand why more teams don't take the short corner avenue especially considering how uneffective the usual lump it in the mixer tactic is for most clubs.

It's probably just playing the odds game. You're guaranteed to get a cross in from a normal corner but with a short corner, the player receiving the ball is often closely trailed by an opposing player/s before the corner is taken so it's harder to make it effective.

We found a much more effective routine - the one which won a penalty vs Spurs. We should give it another go.

Just give it to Hatem, basically. Found myself shouting it throughout the Villa game, even when we were in our own half.
