I do think it's daft to talk about relegation at this stage. There seemed to be a desire to go out and stick a couple past them but at the same time we were very aware that a draw would do, particularly once HBA and Cisse had got injured. Even at 1-0 up we looked like we'd settle for 1-1.

The performance was awful mind. We're just completely lacking a game plan at the moment. Injuries have played a huge part and most teams would struggle when they're down to their third choices in a number of positions but it's basic stuff like set pieces, which are absolutely diabolical at and have been for ages. Sitting off players until the enter our 18 yard box is another habit which we've gotten into and needs sorting out.

Don't think too much can be read into that game. It's a lacklustre competition and we are in a particularly drab group. Small crowd, virtually meaningless game, crap competition... not far off bring a testimonial in terms of an event. The whole thing was an exercise in going through the motions.

The last 20 minutes was like being back at school and waiting for the bell to go so you could go home. Getting virtually no enjoyment from watching us atm, it's fucking tedious.

Last couple of league games I've noticed myself sitting there daydreaming about the rush of jumping up and down roaring when we score. :embarrassed:

And there's me getting laughed at for not wanting to play our best players. Just the 2 important injured.

Maybe they should stop training too.

Would the performance/result be any different if we'd have played more kids? No. Is the Southampton game massively affected? Yes.

Players can get injured at any time. The suggestion that you should leave players out in case they get injured is completely fucking ridiculous tbh.

It really is turgid shite this season. No movement. Same pathetic set pieces. No imagination. The reserves and bairns not good enough. Very depressing watching us at the moment. We've morphed into bloody sunderland!

Why pick that side then, when he hasn't all season? Why the change in selection if we were merely going through the motions? Why risk the injuries we've now picked up?

We can't have it both ways. He didn't pick a side to do a job tonight IMO. They should have battered the opposition.

As I suspected before kick off, that side was picked to deliver a good win and boost confidence.

Would Ben Arfa be fit for the next 2 or 3 games if he wasn't playing tonight? Of course he would. When was he last inured in training?

Ba went down inured at one point but luckily he was OK.

AP didn't pick a team to do a job, he picked a team to get a good PR result. I don't think the players shared this objective, they're not the ones being blamed for our poor form.

Didnt see any of it but can imagine it quite well. One guy with the ball and everyone else standing around with hands in their imaginary pockets waiting for the ball to miraculously end up in the Maritimo goal?

yeah.  Without wanting to dig up "football in paint again"...

Maritimo have scored five goals in nine league matches this season - a lower scoring rate than Sunderland. They had one goal in four EL matches before tonight.

I'm almost certain the commentator said that they had an experimental lineup out there tonight too.
