Massadio Haïdara

Optimistic Nut

If this had happened to Sammy's leg they'd still be picking up the pieces of it from the DW pitch

Yet had it been Tiote they'd still be picking up pieces of McManaman.

:tiote:

I shudder to think of Sammy receiving a blow even half that strength. Skinniest little stick legs I've ever seen on a footballer.

The midfielder escaped punishment for his challenge on Newcastle defender Massadio Haidara, but could miss the game against Norwich because of an ankle problem

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has expressed concern over the fitness of midfielder Callum McManaman ahead of their vital relegation run-in.

The 21-year-old has been the subject of much attention following his controversial tackle on Massadio Haidara in the Latics' 2-1 win over Newcastle, a challenge which went unpunished despite pleas for retrospective action to be taken.

However, Martinez has now revealed that McManaman, who scored in the FA Cup win over Everton, could miss their upcoming encounter with Norwich after sustaining an ankle injury in the impressive victory at Goodison Park.

"Callum's been carrying an injury to his ankle, which caused him to be substituted against both Newcastle and Everton," Martinez told reporters.

"Our major concern now is making sure he's fully fit and able to take to the field against Norwich."

Wigan still sit three points adrift of safety at the bottom of the Premier League, and Martinez is keen to ensure that McManaman is fit to try and pull his side away from danger after he also provided an assist in their most recent triumph.

He added: "He hasn't trained with the rest of the team yet, and the next 48 hours will be crucial."

Anyone else feel that Martinez is using injury as an excuse to withdraw him from the match and subsequent attention/dog's abuse?

No, given they're playing at home this weekend - and he did play at Everton iirc. Afterall he did leave the ground to a warm applause (against us), when Martinez subbed him, so i can't see the home support turning on a youngster.

Anyway he's going to be a target for opposition teams from now on, verbally & physically - verbally from the terraces away from home. Re: opposition teams, if he as much as touches anybody, McManaman should be coralled/ganged-up on at every opportunity (in a targeted attempt/s to unsettle the lad). If McManaman doesn't have the mental dexterity to deal with that, Martinez may as well get rid of him, so this 'attention' he will cop could very well be the making of him - as footballer with a newly found level of maturity. I'd say it would be detrimental to his development, to shelter him from the subsequent dog's abuse/extra attention etc. Now is the testing time for him, for Martinez to gauge if he's able to make the transition from a live-wire 'sniper' (dating back to reserves), to that of a even tempered/mature footballer.

He'll be fine as long as he keeps his mouth shut and avoids a verbal brain-snap (ie. in that he doesn't delve into 'lets kick racism out of football' territory, or a stream of F-bombs) he'll dodge the wrath of the eagle-eyed & somewhat overly self-righteous lip-readers in their armchairs - because McManaman must be close to the top of many neutrals' most-wanted/hated/love-to-see-fall list atm.

Wigan may be playing at home but media attention will all be on McManaman if he plays. It won't be easy knowing eyes are on you to make anything worthy of a press field day, regardless of home support.

Their Everton match was before our match and his despicable tackle. Not sure what relevance it has here?
