madras
i get it now. on those occasions when we've actually started quite well it's been because of the oppositions tactics to sit back from the off. it happens quite a lot that the team chasing the game has more of it (villa the other week at arsenal was a good example, i don't think wenger's instructions were to sit on the lead). more of a concern was until very recently that we couldn't apply that pressure after going behind. Exactly. Done for absolutely any negative.
Lotus
I'm not sure how tiredness is responsible for camping outside your own area from kick-off. Far too soon and to be that conservative and got an early punishment. No way should we be putting ourselves in such a position at that stage of the match against that kind of opposition. I'm assuming that we planned to sit deep from kick-off btw. And nor our awful tendency to allow the opposition to take the initiative early in the second half. I seriously doubt we were told to start deep, just that they got a fair few players around our box at the 1st opportunity and our defensive line sat a little deeper as a result. As to why we don't come out firing on all cylinders for the 2nd half of games, i don't know, haven't a clue.
Ishmael
Players are given specific lines on a pitch to press to and no further. We will have 2, 3 or even 4 set pressure lines in our match strategy and will have a starting point. Our line from the kick-off was extremely deep, ergo that was the plan and it cost us a goal. The overall point is: I don't want to see us sitting so deep from kick-off. I accept that it may be beneficial not to attempt to apply high pressure from kick-off because that might increase our vulnerability of conceding, but sitting too deep actually increases the likelihood of conceding. It can be counterproductive.

NG32
How were we camped outside our own area, man? Cabaye and Colo were setting up tents after one minute.
WarrenBartonCentrePartin
very late here, but having listened to the BBC Newcastle commentary, didn't realise Santon passed up the opportunity to take the penalty.
LRD
Was he ever a designated penalty taker? Can't see him taking one when we have Cabaye on the pitch.
WarrenBartonCentrePartin
http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/nufc around 7.10. Just going on Mick Lowes' words.
Kanj
Wha? Santon takes a class penalty?
Ronaldo
Seems very random, like. Perhaps nobody really wanted to take it and Santon was asked having not scored for us yet.

I'm sure those lads in the Corner with the big Fans Amici Santon banner will join me. Y'know, the one with a picture of Mike Williamson on it. Wilson
My old mans mate hates Santon as well, mainly down to his "shit defending and I'm not having this 'but he gets forward well' shite cos he gives it away half the time and doesn't get back"
Ishmael
Cabaye's penalty was not assertive. It was hit at a height and pace that gave a gambling keeper a one in two chance of a save.
aussiemag
I thought it was a really good penalty kick. He scored FFS. Until he misses I dont mind how they go in.
LRD
He missed a fair few in his last season at Lille but besides Shola, I don't see any other notable penalty takers other than Cabaye and Ben Arfa.
