We needed this win and I'm pleased we managed it, but it wasn't as easy as the score-line looked.

Elliot had a decent game in goal, not to blame for either goal - Tiote had his best game for ages and we needed that performance because they often went through us on the flanks...esp on Santon's side. Gouffran once again ran his heart out and Sissoko's goal was down to him, but Gouffran spent too much time covering for Santon and that undoubtedly took some steam out of him.

Cabaye was class - hope he is OK, we need this player more than any other and it will be a miracle if we manage to hang on to him because he looks as if he could play at the very top. Why he hasn't been given Pens to take before now is a mystery to me because I just knew he would take a good one and so it proved.

Def a pen too - blatant arm up to Debuchy's cross in the area.

The OG really killed them off - had that not happened we could have been struggling to hang on to the lead. They are a good side and Pochettino has them well organized......if we had that sort of organization with our players......

Sissoko's non-stop running was a big asset and Cisse's goal brilliantly taken - much frustration evident in the way he hit that volley..!

A bit of pressure off now - lets see how we handle Swansea...and Laudrup.

Agree with all of this. Nevertheless we scored 4 goals and were worthy of the win. They're a good side in terms of no one has closed us down as quickly and as well as they have.

Atmosphere was shite, everyone seemed on edge.

Didn't see the game but thought Taylor was at fault for both goals just on the highlights, 6.5 seems a bit high considering that? How did he look for the most part? Also must say Debuchy looked to be making a massive difference going forward just on those highlights.

My feeling with Taylor is that, like Simpson, he concentrates so hard on staying goal-side of his opponent and not getting turned that he doesn't get close enough. He often ends up blocking shots (which he's good at, to be fair) rather than making a tackle or intercepting.

Trouble is, you're going to get caught out now and then, and I think that was the case for the first goal.

Over 90 minutes I think we just about deserved the win but at 2-2 it was on a knife edge and I thought they looked more likely to go on and win it, fearing that we may have tired after playing Thursday.

I took Alex Ferguson's remarks about Soton being the best team they've played this season with a pinch of salt, but they do look very good and move the ball around very quickly and efficiently.

He was fine otherwise, but as you say his marking was absolutely criminal for both of the goals. If we'd lost 2-1 then people would be giving Taylor 2/10 or something. The second one in particular he was absolutely miles away from Lambert, Santon was at fault for being absolutely nowhere too, but it's not really an excuse for Taylor to fuck up too.

Quotes from Elliott worth keeping in mind

“Some of the fans might have been a bit disgruntled with us (in the early stages of Sunday’s game) but especially after the long flight to Ukraine, it’s tough,” said Elliot. “We got back at four in the morning and trained the next day. Then you’re playing again on the Sunday for 90 minutes.

“I didn’t play on Thursday and I was struggling, and I play in goal. It is tough but we showed the desire. We know we’ve got a rest until Swansea of six days, so it was a case of winning the game then getting our recovery for Saturday.

NO, not acceptable.  Southampton were all over us for 5 whole MINUTES!

The whole slow start thing on Sunday was ridiculous. That said, we were a bit sluggish coming out for the 2nd half and not just against S'oton but just about every Prem game we've played this year. They're sort of separate issues because Sunday was unusual but why we're off the pace at the beginning of every half is a bit weird!

I'm not sure how tiredness is responsible for camping outside your own area from kick-off.  Far too soon and to be that conservative and got an early punishment.  No way should we be putting ourselves in such a position at that stage of the match against that kind of opposition.

I'm assuming that we planned to sit deep from kick-off btw.

And nor our awful tendency to allow the opposition to take the initiative early in the second half.

i get it now. on those occasions when we've actually started quite well it's been because of the oppositions tactics to sit back from the off.

it happens quite a lot that the team chasing the game has more of it (villa the other week at arsenal was a good example, i don't think wenger's instructions were to sit on the lead). more of a concern was until very recently that we couldn't apply that pressure after going behind.

I seriously doubt we were told to start deep, just that they got a fair few players around our box at the 1st opportunity and our defensive line sat a little deeper as a result.

As to why we don't come out firing on all cylinders for the 2nd half of games, i don't know, haven't a clue.

Players are given specific lines on a pitch to press to and no further.  We will have 2, 3 or even 4 set pressure lines in our match strategy and will have a starting point.  Our line from the kick-off was extremely deep, ergo that was the plan and it cost us a goal.

The overall point is: I don't want to see us sitting so deep from kick-off.  I accept that it may be beneficial not to attempt to apply high pressure from kick-off because that might increase our vulnerability of conceding, but sitting too deep actually increases the likelihood of conceding.  It can be counterproductive.

i'd like to where tiote's was as he was all over the place. far from sitting too deep he was letting midfielders get in behind him and on more than one occasion they had a forward and a couple of midfielders in a line in fron of our back 4, if anything, the opposite of sitting too deep.
