Newcastle 1 - 1 Benfica - 11/04/13 (2 - 4 on agg) - post-match reaction from p60

It hasn't been terrible or pathetic. It's been conservative but that was the gameplan so you'll just have to like it or lump it. They've been dangerous and we rode our luck once but that was going to be the nature of the game.

We've shown bursts of promise and although there doesn't appear to be anyone capable of carving a chance now - we've got a lot of creativity on the bench. I still think we can win this.

Exactly, either some people are thick as shit or they're deliberately choosing to whinge for no reason.

Or they think the manager's doing the wrong thing. I know it's a novel idea but stick with me on this one.

I hope people are this negative just so it´s easier deal with a loss if it happens.

Every match is eye-wateringly shit to watch, and every match the same people are accused of being negative for saying so.

I hope to God we get the 2 goals we need in the 2nd half but this really isn't the only (or actually the smartest IMO) way to go about it.

It's risky waiting to the last 20 mins and tbh if Benfica were leading right now you couldn't have too many complaints about them deserving it or not. We were lucky with that goal line clearance your man should have buried it but fair play to Haidara for getting in the right place.

I don't understand why people are pissed at our lack of attacking threat. If anybody watched the interview with Pards before the game he said he'd be happy if it was 0-0 at 70 minutes. That's our game plan, now let's see what happens.

Exactly. Fair enough some fans would rather we just went at them and fuck the consequences, but Pardew's approach is obvious. We'll see if it works.

If that is the approach then the approach is stupid.

Enjoyable first half guys. Benfica is playing good, controlling the game until the last 15 minutes. If Gaitán scored that easy goal we could be with one foot in the next stage already... but Benfica usually likes to make us suffer a little bit.

Hope you guys dont's score first, because if you do, it will be a really hard second half.

What on earth are you talking about?

Whatever.

YouPorn is unbelievable. I can't believe how fast it progresses, 6 months ago the videos were so pixelized that I couldn't distinguish a shemale cock from a small puppy, now it's like I can count the hairs in the balls of this fatso I'm watching f***ing a vagina simulator.

 It's always one or the other.  Aye, I wanted us to play 10 up front.

I find it pretty odd that people seem to be saying that we can only do all-out attack (automatically leaking goals) or all-out defence (automatically not threatening), as though this is understandable or acceptable for a top flight team. Er, shouldn't we be capable of finding a balance?

I think i was blinded by our play, it was fairly ugly.

Some of the passing was nice at times, thanks mainly to Haidara/Jonas/Sissoko (all three have been fantastic)... it's the occasional lofted ball forward to nowhere which is seriously irksome. It never, ever works when all we've got up there is Cisse, so I wish we'd just cut it out. It screams clueless-ness, and we needn't resort to it when some of our passing play has been very neat and tidy.

The passing was ok tbf, i was on about the set pieces, it's just so ugly and pointless. Can they not see how fruitless and pathetic it is to persist with such a negative ending tactic.

To be fair, he's doing exactly what he said he'd do before the match. Might as well give it a chance to backfire before we crucify him.

You can't simply gift a team 70 mins of a game, its f***ing ludicrous. About as ludicrous as playing an 18 year old DM at RW as someone else pointed out. Pards can f*** off as far as I'm concerned. Its woeful management. The very fact we are playing that free kick to Willo still should see him f***ing sacked now

Obviously yeah. I just think it's futile to whinge about something you know is coming, especially when we haven't conceded and now have a clearer picture of what we need to do.

You must be able to understand the difficulty of deciding on an attacking approach from the start, when a goal basically puts you out.

Pardew's gameplan: Get to 0-0 until 70th minute, score two goals. If that works, we go through. If it doesn't, we don't.

You may not like the idea of it - but theoretically it is working so far. I can't see why you can't hold the serious criticism until FT on this occasion, because - so far - the formula that is going to win us the game is working. Lots more to do this half, I'll admit.

Footballers like and need a clear job to do in general. Our job is a lot clearer now there's only 45 mins to go. We'll see if they can execute.

Ian, you're a good guy, but honestly you'd sound less daft if you just said 'I agree with everything Pardew does' and leave it at that.

Cabaye for Marveaux and move Bigi into cm.

Wat

He's off the boil. Looks shattered and not having the tenacity he normally has. Bigi is playing an unfamiliar role on the right wing, Marveaux can play as a winger and caused these problems last week.

No Stu, what he is doing is trying to draw so he can go post-game and complain about the mistakes of the first tie. Fuck it, now he'll put Benny and/or Marv on and hopefully that will change the game around. If it does he will be praised by guys like you when in reality it's all desperation from his side.
