LRD Posted November 25, 2013 Share Posted November 25, 2013 French 75% tax rate proposal rejected The French Senate voted on Monday to reject the government's proposed 75 percent rate of income tax that clubs say will damage French football. President Francois Hollande wants to tax all revenue over one million euros at 75 percent. The levy would be paid by employers and affect some 14 Ligue 1 clubs, bringing in an additional 44 million euros to the government. Clubs had threatened to boycott games in France's top two tiers at the end of November as a means of raising awareness over the issue, which they claim will lead to French clubs being less competitive in Europe and see established stars and promising talents go elsewhere. However, France's upper House of Parliament has voted against the measure. The lower house, the National Assembly, has yet to have its say on the issue. Socialist Senator Francois Marc had attempted to add an amendment, which would have meant Monaco -- currently exempt from French tax laws -- also being subject to the measure. The Principality club have already made it clear they will not accept the French Football League's demand that all affiliated clubs be based on French soil for tax purposes come the end of the 2013-14 campaign.
