Five star U.S. women’s soccer players are filing a wage-discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission seeking equal pay with their male counterparts.

U.S. Olympic champions Carli Lloyd, Hope Solo, Alex Morgan and Becky Sauerbrunn appeared on TODAY to discuss the move Thursday morning. Megan Rapinoe was also involved in the complaint.

U.S. women are paid between $3,600 and $4,950 per game, while men receive $6,250 to $17,625. Women receive 44 percent of what their male counterparts earn for making the World Cup team, according to TODAY, citing the complaint.

Kessler said that in 2015 the U.S. women’s national team made over $16 million for U.S. Soccer, while the men’s team caused a $2 million loss. Last year was a World Cup year for the women, but not for the men.

If there's anywhere the case could be made for equal pay, it's the U.S. It'll be interesting to see how it pans out. Frankly, the "quality is lower" argument that we'll hear is irrelevant.

I'd like to know: total attendance drawn, cost of tickets for attendance, prize money won. I'm going to hazard a guess and say the USMNT make a lot more money going to a world cup than the women do.

And U.S. Soccer is beginning to budget more for the women's team, roughly bringing them on par with the men's team over the next few years, without offering relative increases in pay.

Personally, it's a non-profit organization that should be paying men and women equally, regardless of how much more lucrative the men's game is worldwide than the women's.

Could probably do with a bit more context to that graph like  Total money drawn? Attendance monies?

And non-profit is not the same as just pay everyone the same regardless of what they actually provide to the organization.

It's USSF's budgeting per FY, iirc. I'll try to find where I stole it off Twitter, think it was from Grant Wahl.

If the women's team brings in less than the men's team, it's not by much (believe I read the women's team turned a substantial profit in 2015 while the men's turned a loss, though the men were budgeted quite a bit higher, for Gold Cup/Confed Cup playoff).

Putting the numbers aside, I think USSF has only to gain from offering equal pay (besides the obvious of having to dish out more cash to the players). There's a lot of free PR (and goodwill) to be gained from setting the industry standard.

Surprised Question of Sport is still on TV

I always preferred They Think It's All Over

Laughed so hard at this particular show:

Classic  Wonder if they could still get away with the feel the sportsman round? I remember one where Rory Mcgrath was pretending to shag some young lass on a bobsleigh

Weird to think that Nick Hancock and Lee Hurst pretty much disappeared from TV - always wonder what guys like that do.  Do they just get 'normal' jobs?

Nick Hancock did exactly that for a while, he was a mortgage broker about ten years ago.

I always think that about soap actors, particularly those who show up every so often. Like what does Jim McDonald do with his time between his once-every-five-years cameo on Corrie?

Saw Lee Hurst do standup less than a year ago at the comedy venue he owns in London, which is the Backyard Comedy Club in Bethnal Green. He was really funny like, think he was seriously ill for a while though hence why he disappeared.

Did a bit of a wiki search on Hancock and Wullie is correct - looks like he had a break from it all and then went to work as a mortgage broker.  Since then he appears to have done a few tv series, but nothing of any real significance.  I wonder if he'd have taken a break if he'd known that his career would basically be over as a result.
