It would make more sense if you were a Spaniard or some other nationality that has a team capable of winning the world cup. USA have no chance of winning so even if he had a great season you'd still have a mediocre world cup as always.

Newcastle have no realistic chance of winning anything either. Why do you still support them?

Because that's what fans do.

Club fortunes go up and down and clubs can decide their own fate with ambition and money. With a national team it's pot luck. You either have a good pool of players or you don't.

I understand that international football doesn't mean much to Newcastle fans, particularly as the England team tends to ignore the periphery. That's fine, I get it.

Club football isn't nearly as developed in the U.S. as it is over there. So the one team that we've grown up with, that's been a constant for years, has been the national team. This isn't an unusual phenomenon, and I'd say it's probably the norm in most countries that don't have strong club leagues.

We're America, for fucks sake. More and more kids aren't being allowed to play Football, and are being shoved into soccer because of health concerns. There's your pool.

This is sure to be wildly unpopular, but I'm a U.S. fan before I'm a Newcastle fan.

Back on topic, ish, I'm absolutely loving Sunderland's woefulness at the moment. Di Canio is so obviously an absolute clown; the derby victory is bound to live fondly in the memory, but it's as good as it'll ever get for him and he'll be universally disliked down there by the time he leaves. If his personality was matched with good results he would be likeable, I suppose, but when they're this shit it's bound to rile them all up eventually.

They've got such a pish squad, like. Mignolet, Rose and Sessegnon all left and by the looks of it they've done absolutely bot all to address that - in spite of all the players he brought in.

He needs a couple of fluke results to allow him to continue the damage. Last year they cut the chord on O'Neil before it was too late. I want Di Canio to ride his luck just enough so that he can last long enough to take them down.

I reckon the "3-0 marra ftm lol" will keep him in a job long for much longer than he should be allowed.

The lasting damage will be done with his signings and not replacing the quality that has left. As said several times mig, rose & Sess were 3 of their 5 best players by some distance. Johnson & fletcher the two remaining players with good premiership quality, and Johnson is very inconsistent. Another fletcher injury would ruin their season and any chance of survival IMO.

Is Ellis Short really in-tune with the gravitas attached to a derby victory/defeat? Bruce lasted a full year following the 5-1 demolition so, in the same vane, I can't see why their 3-0 win over us will absolve Di Canio of his failings if they appear to be in danger of going down. I can't see him lasting long at all, tbh. Gone by Christmas I reckon.

My worry is that he seems to be a decent motivator, the derby and their second half performance yesterday showing that. It's no fun them being shit if they beat us.

I wouldn't say he was a good motivator. He may have kicked their arses into gear when he first came but since then they've been incredibly flat and he seems to have fallen out with many of the players (Cattermole, Bardsley, Graham, Sessegnon, Potato-face).

This is the crux of it. Infuriating we got beat by this shower of shit purely due to momentum from a new manager.

He's really not up to this top-flight management malarky.
