Newcastle's game in Sacramento heading for sell out but Sunderland fail to capture public's imagination

Newcastle United's game with Sacramento Republic will be a sell out on Saturday night.

The Californian club are still very much on a high after beating Newcastle’s North-East rivals Sunderland at Bonney Field earlier this week.

But the game failed to capture the imagination of the Sacramento public and the stadium was only half full.

Local paper the Sacramento Bee reported: “The match, won on Cameron Iwasa’s 58th-minute goal, was played in a stadium that was only half full (5,700), a shocker for a team that has sold out almost all of its matches at the 11,442-seat Cal Expo facility.”

And Republic chiefs slashed ticket prices for Sunderland’s match with Mexican side Club De Football Pachuca on Friday night to just $14 dollars after low sales.

Republic president Warren Smith said: “Sunderland had talked to us early, then appeared to be headed to Africa.

“They came back to us after we added Newcastle, but they also needed a second match (Sunderland-Pachuca).

“We asked the staff, and they were 50-50 about doing those matches.

“We’re growing a brand, so it’s not all about making money.

“Sometimes you take risks.”

However, the home club will reap the benefits of a sell out crowd.

This is what we want to see from our Chief Sports Writer - bit of Mackem baiting when it's quiet, rather than badly spelled articles about what 5 things we learned from the u18s game.

Bet that article has gone down well on SMB forum. ;D

Wey, there were only three separate threads about it so I'd say the response is 'middling'.

Bet the replies count from the 3 threads combined is well into the hundreds.

A more than decent player in his day, but he's past it now surely. A typical mackem signing of the past 5 years. They should have been all over the Evans signing giving their links etc.

Sunderland are steadily improving their squad for the new season with an impressive four signings already and now they look to turn their attentions to a creative centre midfielder in the shape of Hakan Calhanoglu from Bayer Leverkusen.

Has he stagnated badly or what?

Like fuck are they signing him, he's one of the best freekick takers and attacking midfielders in the Bundesliga.

You are taking the Metro seriously? Not a chance in hell of that happening.

It's definitely happening man. Nah, just that Sunderland have no business being linked with players of that quality.
