TaylorJ_01
I heard that Pardew owes Ashley s*** loads in personal gambling debts and is effectively working for free at the moment to pay it off! Hear that a lot, but can't imagine Ashley would let someone like this, who can't handle money, handle his multi million pound investment...

Hear that a lot, but can't imagine Ashley would let someone like this, who can't handle money, handle his multi million pound investment... It was Llambias that had casino connections(maybe with that other bloke at the start?) not Ashley. It went bust a few years back and the rumour was regularly on this board/everywhere for ages. HawK
I heard that Pardew owes Ashley s*** loads in personal gambling debts and is effectively working for free at the moment to pay it off! how professional (if true) Again, this was the unspoken truth at the time - this is one of the reasons why Pardew's weekly pay is so comparatively low. It was stipulated that he would earn the majority of his wage in the SD-way, that is, all performance related. Money made on net player sales (he would have gotten a huge chunk of Cabaye's fee). I'm speculating, but not without cause, that as it's target driven, with each place worth £X, and a minimum target of 10th being the 'public' target, that he is likely to not earn very much at all on top of his basic if the team drops below 10th. It might even create a situation where Ashley can get rid of him much more cost-effectively as it may be worked into the contract that agreed-upon minimum season expectation targets had to be met. Lets not forget, Ashley does not make mistakes (cough). Now, if there was a public target and that was not met, he can safely get rid of Pardew without much backlash and actually improve his standing with the more naive of supporters by doing so. Pardew effectively sold his soul when he signed the 8-year deal to Mike Ashley, he won't walk away, he can't now with his managerial reputation (if any) is in tatters he won't be easily employed again in the PL, and he needs to service said gambling debts. Ashley doesn't want to be seen to have made a mistake with his 8-year contract, so unless Pardew performs well below agreed expectations, he's here for another 6 years. Unless.. The fans do something about it, and hit Ashley where it hurts, and that's his SD brand.
Wallace
I still can't bring myself to believe that Ashley employed Pardew purely because of a gambling debt even though the story won't go away.
HawK
I still can't bring myself to believe that Ashley employed Pardew purely because of a gambling debt even though the story won't go away. Very much doubt it's the sole reason, but it's certainly a good way to get the manager to sign whatever you want - Ashley pays the debt off, Pardew pays back Ashley with a low-basic contract. If the manager makes you money (positions, transfers), then performance related gains make sense.

Which adds more fuel to the fire that he 'hates' Newcastle. What better way to gamble than by investing in a football team.
Matt
Has Ashley ever been involved in gambling?(no nufc jokes needed ) That's how he knew Llambias, through Del's time running the Fifty casino in Mayfair. Les Ambassadeurs is Mike's current venue of choice, often alongside fellow retail billionaire Philip Green. There are various reports of him blowing or winning huge amounts in one session. So the chances of Pardew owing Ashley money is far more unlikely than Pardew owing Llambias like most stories said. Fwiw i knew he was regularly gambling but you confirmed my thought that he wasnt directly involved
mrmojorisin75
story still doesn't make sense really, tell pardew to get a job elsewhere and pay off his debts while using a real manager to manage his multi-million pound asset llamblias and pardew friends from the casino's, pardew uses his influence to get dekka to grease him into the job...it'll be no more or less than that

Ste
There are plenty of real sticks to beat Pardew with. We don't have to use a lazy made up story about gambling debts.
Guest bimpy474
It's not gambling debts ffs. They swallowed his bullshit that he was better than Hughton and could control the changing room. He probably agreed to get rid of Nolan, Smith Harper and Barton as part of getting the job. Gets the job, does well the first season as he's done in most jobs, thicko's in the football sense Llambias and Ashley fell hook line and sinker after we finished 5th, boom 8 year contract. Now as it's started to all fall apart with 2 seasons of shit football with the odd good game, he's blaming the Europa games or the players, or players he doesn't have. Maybe just maybe Ashley is beginning to see him for what he actually is. A shit manager who shouldn't be anywhere near a job this big. Anyone with half a football brain can see how limited this bloke is, our style (lack of it), tactics, set penises, team selections, defensive set up that is so bad we concede ridiculous amounts of daft goals. Not even going to mention the mentalness of his bullshit in press conferences and in the media. Debts my arse, his bullshit worked and now it's all coming apart at the seams. Just like any liar, the lies catch up in the end.
