The other games today - 2013/14

Well, strictly speaking when the tugging starts outside of the box and continues in it is a pen, but to allow play to continue that long is taking the piss. Anyway, what are Cardiff up to FFS. Gifted them two goals.

Dowd is corrupt.

Ner. Ref was spot on. The guy f***ed up and tried to make up for it by pulling him back.

It was about 5 yards outside the box.

You can give a penalty if the pull carries on into the box, but you can't go back after the striker has gone around the GK, to cross it. The advantage was over. It was either give the free kick immediately, give the penalty if you felt it carried on into the box.

The length of time on the advantage was ridiculous, if you go back to the foul.

How so? Thought the free-kick or pen is always given at the first point of contact.

That was a very long advantage to bring back for a pen. Three seconds max, no? (plus, it was outside the box anyway)

Still a red either way mind- you can wait until the ball goes out before giving a red if you see fit, similar to when refs wave play on then come back to book a player a minute later.

And a horrendous piece of defending all round.

He's already let go of his arm as he enters the area.  His hand is basically only brushing away from Whickams hand by the time he gets into the area.

Its a red, but again not a pen even disregarding the dodgy advantage.

It's part of the rules of the game (refeering), you're told to give free kick for shirt pulling/holding immediately, but it's added that if a pull starts outside the box and continues into the box then you can give a penalty.

The two conflict imo, but they're the rules and as a ref you judge them in your opinion in any given incident.

Watched it again and it was a brilliant decision by Dowd, imo.

The decision is ok, it's the length of time on the advantage that's wrong imo. Allowing Wickham to go around the GK to cross it, that's where the problem is.

Still don't agree he continued to foul him inside the area, he pulls him outside the area.  But by the time Whickem steps inside he's let go and any contact is nothing more than his hand brushing Whickams arm on the way back, not enough contact to be called a foul.  Its definitely a red from the foul before hand though.

It was a proper FIFA advantage, I'll give you that

Still the correct decision in my book.

If it was a tackle outside the box leading to the player falling inside it, that would be a free-kick? I can't understand the logic that an offence can happen outside the box and not be called, but when it happens inside, it's valid.
