However the real steps had already begun long before the World Cup with the development of the club game in the 90s - particularly in Japan. It's a balance obviously and you don't want a closed shop mentality that blights other sports but equally developing countries should have to work towards the world stage - not be handed it on a plate. I really am not sure what the likes of Vietnam, Oman, UAE would add to a World Cup at this point. it’s probably to give major nations like China a better chance of qualifying. China, Indonesia and India have some of the largest populations in the world. Imagine what it would do for FIFAs bank account If they can get those populations more invested. Make the first round a knock out and then revert to type or something. Bar the real stuff uneven/non divisible tournament formats are usually probably my biggest bugbear in football/sport. But obviously I agree, the new CL format looks absolutely wank, as has the last couple of Euros been since it was expanded. Nout wrong with mixing things up in my opinion , the World Cup however is more of a touchy thing to change - I don’t actually thing a 2 yearly World Cup would be a bad thing either , it’s just something which people are precious over, every 2 years it would still be fun Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
