I did check the date first.

There’s a small part of me that bizarrely likes this, insofar as there are more opportunities for intercontinental matches, but the logistics are just fucking stupid.

If it wasn’t being run as a money-grabbing operation by FIFA it might work. You could run it across multiple countries every time, losing the character of individual World Cups but gaining a “World” feel. Maybe restrict it to an individual country but not worry about venue size or corporate boxes etc. Massively limits potential countries but would be fun watching Uzbekistan v Curacao at Brentford for £30. It’s just never going to happen.

Shit idea as per.

Wouldn't happen but if they had 64 teams and the first round was a knockout before reverting back to a 32 team standard format it wouldn't be horrific but there's more chance of me being the next FIFA president than that happening.

Why fuck further with a formula that has served pretty well for decades.

Who watches a World Cup and thinks, ‘what we need is some more shite teams in it’.

At least half of the early games would be completely unwatchable and qualifying would be rendered next to pointless.

I hate what they're doing to the world cup, but to be honest if you're going to bloat the tournament you might as well have it so that 2 teams qualify from each group and do away with this shitey best 3rd placed team qualifies nonsense.

The problem is that they won't stop at 64 teams, they'll keep going until you have groups comprising of Gondor, Atlantis, Westeros and Planet Zog

I've no beef with the basic idea of a 64-team World Cup tbh. Returns it to a traditional group stage; showcases more nations/fanbases/players; and, best of all, it would invite opportunities to slim-down the qualification process, theoretically easing fixture congestion.

Might as well make it no qualifying needed which means less international breaks.

Just cut to the chase and scrap qualifiers and call the whole thing the World Cup and have an entire continent host all the games.

I do, tbf  Hate when it's only the "big" nations left, lose all interest. I want to see random players from Iraq I've never heard of look like they're Maradona incarnated, then watch all the big clubs fight each other to sign them only based off two-three great group games and then see them rot away in the Real Madrid reserves for the next ten years :aww:

Yeah, I usually get the most entertainment from the smaller countries playing each other - the contrast in styles, the often mental crowds, the often far more entertaining games themselves.
