toontownman
Was wondering whether this so called interest with Everton and Roma in Mitrovic were just fabricated to pump the price up a bit more. That said, we will probably be sat here this time tomorrow, pissing and moaning about both moves being hijacked.
KaKa
Definitely some of that going on. Remember Dortmund being in for Dost when we were showing interest. Have not heard him linked with anyone else since their guy claimed we needed to pay more, and we seemingly walked away or cooled our interest. Mole_Toonfan
Roma have been linked with Mitrovic for a while, i can definitely see that being the case with Everton and Wijnaldum but not so much with Mitrovic.
taxfree
http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/football/newcastle/13379292.Big_deal_____Wijnaldum_heading_for_Magpies_after___15m_breakthrough/ NEWCASTLE UNITED are ready to offer Giorginio Wijnaldum £3m a year at St James’ Park after an agreement was reached with PSV Eindhoven for their highly-sought after captain. The Magpies have stepped up their interest in the Holland international within the last few days and managing director Lee Charnley flew over to Eindhoven to reach an agreement over a £15m fee. Now Wijnaldum, who The Northern Echo exclusively revealed was one of McClaren’s leading targets for the first time on June 13, is expected to head for Tyneside to discuss the finer details of the move and decide his future. Village Idiot
That works out to about 60k/week. 14 goals from midfield, even if it's the Dutch league, sounds very nice. Much better if he indeed can play in central midfield (whoscored suggests he's played there the majority of the season), since I have always thought you needed somebody there with a clue. junkhead
Not seen much from Wijnaldum, of course, but he seems an identical player to Sissoko. Although McClaren seemed to play a lot with two box-to-box midfielders at Derby - Kendrick and Hughes. I can't see us employing Sissoko and Georginio in similar roles, as they lack any sort of defensive application. Sissoko is leaving is my guess. JUICE690
From todays Chronicle, for what it's worth. Newcastle hope to complete a deal for PSV Eindhoven star Georginio Wijnaldum in time for him to join their touring party to the US – and United are confident of landing another target in the coming days. Wijnaldum is one player they want, and club sources are confident of further progress on another unnamed target before the weekend. United have submitted an offer in excess of £11m for Wijnaldum, a long-term target, and PSV are ready to sell the midfielder – who is interested in a move to Newcastle. Talks are planned for today, with Wijnaldum wanting to hear more about United’s summer plans, which also include interest in compatriot Bas Dost. Newcastle also believe they have a chance of signing Charlie Austin, who will return to pre-season with QPR and is attracting interest from Crystal Palace, who hope to sign Yohan Cabaye. But it is interest in Wijnaldum – which was firmed up when Lee Charnley flew to Holland earlier this week – that is furthest forward. Everton are also keen on him but Newcastle hope to have stolen a march, and with Daryl Janmaat, Siem de Jong and Tim Krul all part of their first team there is a clear appeal to join the growing band of Dutch stars at St James’ Park. Newcastle head to America on Saturday and it would require quick progress to get him signed up by then but United are hopeful. To the frustration of many they will head to Gateshead on Friday with the same squad that John Carver was picking from at the end of last season but there is a new backroom team in place. One of them – Ian Cathro – insists that United must work hard to get themselves back on track. “There are not many parts of this industry that are Monday to Friday, nine-to-five,” he said. “This is all the time or none of the time. You’re either in or you’re out – and in order for us to achieve the things that we need to achieve, everyone needs to be in.” Newcastle have been working with the ball since the first day of pre-season and Cathro says that is part of the plans. He said: “It’s very difficult to play football without the ball - it’s an important component of the game, so I think that’s a very clear message that that’s how you improve things and that’s our way of working. “We have a trip to America and by the time we return, we’re going to be in a good position to know what needs to be done in the build up to the new season.” United are set to release details of Monday night’s Fans Forum on Thursday. Newcastle still have work to do to convince many they have turned over a new leaf. Like the quote from Cathro, little dig at the previous coaching setup in there?
