Thanks for everything Jamaal. Aye. Some of this all harkens back to Lascelles and Rafa - the shift in attitude towards the club - the notion that Newcastle was not simply a stepping stone. Newcastle United should demand respect and hold itself in higher regard than it perhaps was.  I do wonder what involvement Rafa had with Staveley. I once had a meeting with him (Rafa) and he was an absolute legend like, he was giving his views on the protests and stuff and asking us to maybe do one or two things slightly differently. Which made me think he knew all along what was brewing behind the scenes.  Back to Lascelles though, he called out all this shit in the changing room at Southampton one half time if I remember correctly then was quickly made captain shortly after (I think). Maybe not from a footballing perspective but from a professional one, he has earned the right to a winners medal and the privilege of being one of the first to lift a cup. The College Dropout
Lascelles was captain and immediately dropped from the side. It says a lot about him as a professional that he kept his professionalism at the top level and made sure he was ready when his opportunity came. At times last season he was even zinging balls through the lines and out wide.  I’ve got so much love for him, Krafth and the like.  I never want a squad of over pampered primadonnas. If he wants a job in the backroom where he’s allowed to beat up lazy premierleague footballers let’s give it to him.

JT24 Posted Wednesday at 18:16 Share Posted Wednesday at 18:16 (edited) Appears his contract expires next summer, as per The Athletic.  https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/6267514/2025/04/09/jamaal-lascelles-newcastle-contract/?source=user_shared_article Edited Wednesday at 18:16 by JT24

He either stays for his last year and leaves with as much goodwill as he'll ever have next summer or he gets sold this summer and enjoys actually playing football again for another club.

ponsaelius Posted Wednesday at 20:02 Share Posted Wednesday at 20:02 I actually foresaw a situation where he was released but hung around to continue his recuperation and potentially signed a short term deal, so this isn't all that different if we've triggered a 1 year extension on the sly. Not sure about it really - but wouldn't question the logic if Howe thinks it's worthwhile. Can kind of see it if we end up in the Europa or Conference.  CB is such a critical position for us in terms of squad building. We desperately need a new RCB in this summer - but will be in a position where Burn and Schar could also need replacing entirely by next summer when they are 33 and 34. Throw in Botman's injury situation and it's definitely a position we need to start being proactive for long term and prevent needing an overhaul. The links to the likes of Jumah Bah (who City ended up signing) shoes we're obviously looking at addressing it beyond an immediate first team signing
Pilko Posted Wednesday at 20:05 Share Posted Wednesday at 20:05 Absolutely no problem with him sticking around from both a leadership point of view and to offer emergency cover.
The Prophet Posted Wednesday at 20:27 Share Posted Wednesday at 20:27 If Wilson and Tripps are off, they might not fancy completely braking up that core leadership group.

Superior Acuña Posted Thursday at 00:23 Share Posted Thursday at 00:23 I think he’s a solid squad back up CB, assuming his quality isn’t heavily impacted by his injury. (Then the mentioned leadership benefits too)
r0cafella Posted Thursday at 05:46 Share Posted Thursday at 05:46 We reading anything to the extensions of Krafu, Fabi and Jammy? Wasn't expecting us to renew all 3.
Sibierski Posted Thursday at 05:55 Share Posted Thursday at 05:55 Him around as the emergency 5th choice CB is fine. Shouldn’t be needed outside of low level cup games.

We don't play three at the back and I imagine a right sided centre half is pretty high on our list.

The College Dropout Posted Thursday at 06:54 Share Posted Thursday at 06:54 Not reading much into it.  We’ll sign at least 1 CB this summer. We may use that extension to allow us to sell Lascelles to Saudi for £5m or whatever. Or he’s backup.
Hanshithispantz Posted Thursday at 06:57 Share Posted Thursday at 06:57 We need a "tap the sign" meme knocking up to remind people that real football isn't FIFA/EAFC and players are kept around because they help keep standards up in training ect. Â Obviously we think he's earning his wage.
