Conjo
Guy started two games in the league last season. Away to Liverpool and Man City Don't see CB as a high priority this summer with Lascelles and Burn being decent cover for Schar and Botman.

His ability with the ball at his feet has also greatly improved. More than happy to keep him around personally.
nemtizz
Do hope we sign a CB but part of me would love to see him come in and perform well, especially in the CL.

nufcjb
He mentioned Ritchie as part of the leadership group too. Aye, of course Ritchie probably is not suited to the team on the pitch anymore but he must be great off it that his contract was extended and Jamaal name-dropping him there proves it. Yorkie
Nice to hear from Lascelles, feel like you rarely do these days. Suspect we'll be seeing a bit more from him this season and, if not, it'll probably be his last with us.

Definitely, but some fans are absolute dolts so we probably shouldn't get too wound up about it.

Playing devil's advocate here it all depends on what sort of wage and contract they are on. While we arent skint their wage also contributes to the % wage turn over ratio rule. If they are not playing and roles are to enforce or to help build the culture then I would be mad if they pick up big wages. If we can't build a culture with the pros currently getting loads of game time or the coaching team working with them then something is wrong. No idea what a coaches wage is but that's all they should be on at this point.
Rich
I'm happy to trust Howe and Co. on this one, as with most other things, until they give me enough reason not to. They all clearly see value in keeping certain players around, they all know exactly what they're being paid and how it impacts our overall budget, and they've decided they want them here, at least for another season. And of all the things to be "mad" about in this day and age, the wages of Jamaal Lascelles, Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett, and Mark Gillespie should be very far down our lists. I get that but he must be one of the highest paid whatever there hell he Is, inspirational coach or whatever there is but I trust Eddie. Just can’t wait until we start to trim our numbers accordingly but plenty of others to go first.
gjohnson
There does come a point where new players have take over. Can't hang on to squad members who can't contribute forever just cos they are good leaders in the dressing room. If we could half the 95/96 team would still be lurking around As motivational as Lacelles may be now, when he first came in, he looked and played like a scared youth team player. His change to a leader should be used as an example to the squad and how it's possible to make that step up Edited July 23, 2023 by gjohnson Detail
Rich
Well aye, obviously. Nobody is advocating keeping Lascelles until he's 35. Howe's proven himself to be ruthless enough in the past, too. As soon as his cost outweighs his benefit, he'll be gone from the squad, but it's clearly not that time just yet.

But until then it's nice to see the gaffer have his back and talk so highly of him

And that’s fair - our leadership was a shambles and that’s been sorted enough to steer us to 12th and 4th. If the worst thing we have to complain about them is their cost then things are pretty good. nufcjmc
The leadership group also includes Burn and Trippier who contribute infinetly more as they are a leader on and off the pitch as shown by Trippier showing up to welcome Tonali. Trust Howe but we do need to move on from expensive cheerleaders as we need a strong squad capable of delivering on the pitch not just the training ground and locker room. This is essentially an argument that has no facts as none of us are behind the scenes day to day the same as none of us know how much Man City or man united’s “cheerleaders” cost. Need to trust those who are living it.
AyeDubbleYoo
Class from Howe as expected. I actually don’t think Lascelles is as bad as people think. Shame he’s limited on the ball but he does what he can.
