Jonjo Shelvey (now playing for Burnley)

Recommended Posts

Met him at Whitley Park one afternoon a few years ago when I had a walk along to watch an U23 game. I was with the bairn at the time and not only was he happy to have his photo taken with him but spent another couple of minutes just having a chat with him as well. Really made his day! Came across as a very nice bloke.

That doesn't come from nowhere, I get the feeling a few of our squad did think that at first, possibly including him.

He said in 2016 there were players who didn’t care if they got relegated. Sounds like Howe has some proper team spirit going.

He didn't spend all game holding the CBs hands asking for a 1 yard pass.  Howe must have drilled that out of him.

yeah this has been so important. it means we now have an actual presence in midfield. gone are the days of hayden trying to do the job of 3 players (badly).

He’s been one of our best performers lately, seems like one of the core groups of lads around the dressing room as well. He used to infuriate me at times under Bruce but remembering how he played for Rafa and since Howe came in it shows that he needs to be under a decent manager to have the best brought out of him, think he’s got a big role to play here for the next few seasons.

I think he’s somewhat redundant given we have a back four who are no longer scared of the ball. He may have improved defensively but I wouldn’t exactly call him a good defensive player.

I think the issue is, in order to get Bruno starting we have to change shape and the gaffs rightfully isn’t keen on doing so.

I'm gonna say it. I don't hate Shelvey and I think he gets way too much shit from fans.

He can barely last 90 minutes and he struggles to keep up with play. Somehow managed to avoid being sent off against Everton for a ridiculous foul committed because he was too slow.

His legs’ll only be worse in 12 months’ time, never mind 24 or 36.

Then you must have a very short memory, because beyond the ~12 or so good games he's strung together under Howe, you probably would do well to count another 12 good ones at the top level since he signed in early 2016.

He's contributing well at the moment but the unfit, slouching pointless-long-ping merchant who loves a lunge and a red card is still burnt into my memory. Now we have the ability to go and get someone who still ticks the box marked "range of passing" but who can also run, get about, tackle, win headers and score more regularly, he should be out of the team come the summer and hopefully sold soon after whilst his stock is still high.

I think Howe's done well to bomb out some of the other knackers more urgently (Clark, Ritchie, Gayle in particular) but I'd like to think upgrading Shelvey is near the top of the list come the summer.

This happened the last time, had a run of a few decent games and was awarded with a new contract then before the ink was dry he was back to sub-standard performances. But that was Steve Bruce.

Slight difference now .. we can go spend 35m on a replacement
