Guest chopey
I think he will stay, who wouldn't ? when our midfield is made up of England internationals.
Dave
Townsend playing 1 year in the Chanpionship will have minimal bearing on his England career. He only got in the provisional squad because we bought him, and he openly acknowledged that fact the other day. I think he could be tempted by a better club, but I don't see him being desperate to leave or owt.
The College Dropout
For someone with England aspirations I think any PL team where you will get regular football is better than playing in the Championship. Nobody remembers what you did two seasons ago though. The national coach will pick on the form shown in the most recent top flight season. Someone on the fringes like Townsend needs to keep himself in the picture. I really like the lad. But it's in his best interests to leave. He's too good to play in the Championship. If he can get regular first team football for a decent side he could cement his spot in the squad. I get the too good to play in the Championship stuff, but spending one season in there to help the side with the best chance of going back up is hardly going to hurt him. In fact the 40+ games he could get if he stays injury free could do him wonders, given how little two top tier games he's played for a 24 year old. If we fail to go up he can of course make noises to leave, but everything makes sense to stick with it and come back up with us. I'm hoping he does and think he will. There's what, 8-9 games played during next season. He won't be considered for them. We might also have a different national team manager. I want him to stay. But I just don't see how it's in his best interest to stay. He's not played a lot of PL football and he's 24. Another season out the spotlight. We'll see how things develop. West Ham, Everton and the like should be in for him if they have any sense.
Ankles Bennett
We should send townsend out on loan to a prem team. He can come back when we are promoted. Loic Remy did just that.
Guest
Why on earth would we do that?

LV
We should send townsend out on loan to a prem team. He can come back when we are promoted. We're going to need him to get us promoted in the first place
Ankles Bennett
Only if he wants to play in the prem and agitates for a move.
Guest reefatoon
I hope he just stays. No point in leaving for s*** clubs like Palace, even if they are a league above us. Sit it out for a year, and if somehow we don't get promoted he can leave next summer. I have a good feeling he will hang around and absolutely destroy the championship. toontownman
Weird this 8m clause and palace rumor is still being peddled since local journos have confirmed it is 13m. Will have to get used to it though. This type of stuff us going to happen for every player until the window closes.

Lets loan Rafa to Southampton for a year too if we're coming up with daft ideas.

The College Dropout
Should he want to leave that wouldn't be the worst idea. At the moment that doesn't seem to be the casr
Guest
If he wants to leave then sell and replace. Not loan him out. That does us no good next season.
The College Dropout
With a loan fee we can get a replacement. It's worth the risk. We don't come up - If he does well we'll get more money for him and if not he comes back. He's the only lad I would do it for. Wijnaldum and co. can fuck off. Chicane
Hope he stays but I'd rather we just sold him if he isn't willing to stay in the Championship for a season instead of loaning him out.
Ketsbaia
Telegraph says the buy-out was £8m to top-half clubs, if he made the Euros squad. Otherwise it's £10.5m Basically, no-one knows.

Hughesy
Loaning out our higher profile players for a season isn't exactly the worst idea in the world. Means we don't have to accept any bids that aren't as high as we want (I don't believe that Rafa wouldn't come under pressure to accept some bids, regardless of what's been said), might mean that our players (Townsend) don't exercise release clauses in their contracts if they want to stay but don't want to understandably play Championship football, will take some of the higher earners of the wage bill and will allow us to retain players who, under Rafa, might flourish (Wijnaldum, Sissoko, Mbemba etc) and that we actually want to keep but don't want to take a year out of their career.
Guest
You do that if you're desperate and need to lower the wage bill (like QPR with Remy). We don't seem to need to. If they can't stay one season then sod them. People like Townsend in particular must have known when he signed there was a fair chance we'd go down. If he wants to leave then good luck to him, but I don't like the idea of him and others buggering off for a year then coming back.
