He’s limited, he’s a squad player but I guarantee he gets more g/a contributions than Almiron who’s currently stealing a living here. Doing that irritating thing people do by quoting themselves to prove a point. Buy a proper RW in the summer and Murphy is a more than capable backup. For all his hard work Miggy isn’t a player that’s going to result in us winning enough games.

aussiemag
He’s been excellent for two seasons now. He is disciplined in his positioning, works hard, selects the right options in possession, whips in a great ball. His main downside is his shooting and finishing, but he’s been unlucky hitting the post. Hes a great lad, loves the club and his teammates. Squad players like Murphy are priceless. nufcjmc
When he has an off game he's dog shit but when he is playing well he doesn't look out of place at all. Lad seems happy to be here and help out the little mini celebrations with team mates when we score to me indicate he is one of the characters of the team. The fact I hope he is happy to help out whenever makes me feel he would understand being a squad/rotation player for us particularly if someone comes in for almiron so unless a decent offer comes in for him happy for him to stick around. His close control is also suspect, hence why he struggled so much under Palace's high press when he was asked to play wing back. He does have a very good delivery into the box though, decent enough as a squad player.
Smal
with 0.54 assists per 90 minutes played, he is the highest of all premier league wingers/attacking mids this season.
ponsaelius
Think comparing him and his brother shows how much luck comes into it in making it at the top level. At one point Josh was playing for Cardiff in the PL and Jacob was out on loan in the Championship. Fast forward now and Jacob has played CL this season while Josh has dropped down to upper League One. In reality I don't think there is quite that much of a gap in talent level between the two. They both sold for basically identical fees a year apart. Jacob has benefitted hugely from firstly the club being so dysfunctional under Ashley that we regularly kept inadequate players around for years and offered them long contracts, and secondly from landing on a manager in Howe who has subsequently been able to squeeze every last inch out of his talent level. That's not to do Jacob a disservice - I think he's clearly got an excellent attitude himself and is a good pro. I just find the sliding doors moments in football so interesting when you look at players' careers. In another timeline both brothers possibly end up playing out their careers in the Championship. Yeah excellent point. In a similar vein, it's also the reason why during a difficult run of games when a team's form dips, I feel the tendency supporters have to point blame at the quality of players is often misplaced. Usually the automatic response is to want to rip up squads and declare certain players as not good enough; however there's often much more subtle factors at play, which when addressed can propel the same group of players on an entirely different trajectory. We've seen it ourselves first hand the last three years, yet still after a few bad results you regularly read lists of players in our squad deemed not good enough. I believe players at the top level are generally of a similar technical level other than obvious outliers - it's all of the unquantifables that make the difference. EH the perfect manager for him. Give him simple instructions and he will follow out the game plan. The best on the run crosser of the ball in the club with his ability to arch his delivery. One of the fastest if not the fastest player we have over first few yards and if ahead of a defender rarely being caught either. Underrated vision with the pass to Isak Vs Sheffield Utd in his locker. If you want aggression he’s never going to be your guy. If you want him to win aerial duals or 50/50’s he’s never going to be your guy. Against the crème de la crème will he struggle? Yes… but for the majority of the season as a squad player he’s ideal both on and off the pitch.
Pilko
Really poor today but would still move Almiron on ahead of him.
Lush Vlad
He can’t start at Old Trafford based on that IMO. Barnes was bad, as was Almiron. But they were still constantly looking to get involved and being active in demanding the ball and trying to force the issue. This was all after the game got even more chaotic and with Brighton sitting in from 75-80 for a draw. Murphy just couldn’t wait to cross it to no one or pass the buck by laying it off. On a day with a complete lack of attacking quality. I thought he was the worst. I think Howe likes the cover and width he brings. With Tino always moving inside. Plus Gordon is better on the left and I guess Howe sees that as his position. But I would like to see our £38m man, who has a great goals and assists record start now and then. I do agree with Pilko. I’d still rathe move on Almiron than him. Murphy is a good option and cover some of the time. It feels like Almiron needs to move on and we might actually get a fee for him. Kid Icarus
It's one game. I'm a big critic of Murphy but balance where It's due. Poor today, as a lot of them were, good other weeks. In a way he's personified our season. There have been times I thought he was a waste of money in the championship, the club isn't running a charity but the level he's got to is as surprising as it is impressive as it is satisfying. He'll fall back because we need to improve but I'm never going to shit on any Newcastle player who adheres to the consensus of 'demanding a team that tries'

The lad is one of us and works his bollocks off. He'll be replaced in the likely not-too-distant future with someone better, but no-one could criticise how hard he's worked and how much he's improved under Howe
ATB
I mean, he´s ok and have some ups on others. But he´s just a poor footballer in the end. He can´t play so much as hs´s doing. Player like him and Longstaff are holding us back. If he starts again at OT I would be really disapointed and then I can´t see us win.
St1pe
I think yesterday’s performance is why he’s never progressed from being a squad player. He’s got good games in him, he can’t contribute at times but he’s always got that performance in him that isn’t good enough for the league. I think we’ll keep him and he’ll do a job as a squad player but it again highlights the transfer failing over the last couple of windows not signing a proper right winger.
