Huddersfield Town 1 - 0 Newcastle United - 20/08/17 (post-match from p37)

Recommended Posts

BTW Huddersfield showed today just how important momentum is. Something that c*** Ashley will never understand.

Aye, if we had spent like we should have, the moral it brings is so good for the team. Does that fat idiot think, holding back the money and trying to justify it through a interview of bullshit helps the team in any way.

100%

Think the media have played their part too.. they've been far too eager to make negative headlines. It's meant the season has started on a bummer. With the manager being asked negative questions.. total focus on the players we haven't signed.. instead of the strengths of the ones that got us here.

You'd like to think that players have the mental wherewithal to not pay attention to this.. but we all know they do.

Again this is all at Mike Ashley's door. He's let the press do this by not fully backing Rafa.

This needs to change very quickly or we'll sleepwalk into December with fuck all to show for it.

I am not saying Rafa out, I just mean he is the main reason we lost today.  Quality is not the issue. Before blaming player A player badly or player B is shit, take a look at Huddersfield lineup first.  And tell me what's our attacking plan?  What is Gayle doing? What is Perez responsibility other than recycling the lose ball?  And what the hell is Rafa thinking to sub in Murphy --- and play as a striker?  Diame? Hello Mitro? Is Diame our new white flag?

I just ask a simple question, if you are the gaffer, would you play our tactics and substitution like that?

Very worrying for me.  Rafa clearly has a plan, but more clearly he has an agenda. Some players that are "blacklisted" will never be used unless there is no one left, like Mbemba and Mitrovic.  This won't go on well.

Absolutely f***ing appalling that.

Elliot 5 can't kick for s***

Manquillo 4 abysmal positioning

Lascelles 5 shaky

Clark 4 disgraceful for the goal

Mbemba 5 mixed bag

Merino 7 grew into it, our only strong performance

Hayden 6 effort there

Ritchie 4 s*** again and booked again

Perez 4 pathetic and missed sitter

Atsu 5 nowhere near as good as last week

Gayle 4 invisible

Joselu 6 looked alright

Diame 2 the f*** was that pass?

Murphy - didn't have long enough

Dont really know why you blame Clark for the goal? Merino had a good game except for the goal, he should have closed Mooy down, also Manquillo should have been there to close him down when Merino went to buy a hot dog. Dont know why Geremi is playing with Diame on the back of his shirt.

A big difference is Huddersfield bought players to improve the first 11 we've bought players who barely improve the squad, Rafa needed backing and didn't receive it and with that we've lost all of our momentum and confidence, Ashley's interview was ver and damaging on this front

Guessing they were already writing this up during the match.

Newcastle owner Mike Ashley will need to have another look down the back if his sofa for some cash to back manager Rafa Benitez or he is set to lose hundreds of millions of his beloved cash.

This side, as it stands, will be relegated back to the Championship unless two or three quality players are brought it before the transfer deadline closes.

No 70% discount deals from the bargain bucket or loans but genuine Premier League pedigree players that can help Benitez do his job and establish the club back in the top flight.

Anything else makes no financial sense.

United were outplayed and beaten by a Huddersfield Town side that has been strengthened in the right places from the play-off winners by a smart manager backed by his Chairman.

Not because Town's owner has the wealth of a small country but because he is smart enough to realise when investment pays off. Just like when Ashley managed to find £200m to back a building development in his beloved Chelsea.

A mistake from Jonjo Shelvey's replacement, Mike Merino, gifted Aaron Mooy the chance to curl the winner in the 50th minute and all of our summer signings struggled, although Joselu did OK on his debut after replacing the ineffective Dwight Gayle.

But it could have been a different story had Craig Pawson waved his red card again. He sent off two Chelsea players last week and should have been brandishing again to Steve Mounie for a stamp on Isaac Hayden that was worse than Shelvey's against Spurs.

The only difference was that Mounie was more clever and more sneaky but significantly more vicious.

And Pawson again failed to favour Rafa's side when he waved play-on following a handball in the area that was remarkably similar to one given against Chancel Mbemba by Mike Dean against Manchester United in our relegation season.

Matt Ritchie came inches away from opening the scoring in the 17th minute with a fine snapshot that Jonas Lossl tipped around the post.

But the defensive performance from United deserved to be punished and it was five minutes after the break when Mooy picked up the ball and Merino's weak attempt to stop him allowed the Australian to take a one-two and beat Rob Elliot with a curling effort.

The Magpies still had chances to get back and Javier Maquillo should have done better with a cross straight to the 'keeper after getting in behind the Terrier's defence.

Joselu then found space in the box but hit a weak shot that was easily saved. Ayoze Perez fired over the bar from close range and substitute Jacob Murphy had an effort blocked as the home side hung on for the win.

We started last season with two defeats and finished top of the league so in that respect it's early to press the panic button.

But this is a different ball game entirely. There are only 36 games left now to gain 40 points against 19 other sides that look better equipped and in better spirits - how we've managed to become so negative again so quickly is something only the owner can explain.

He failed miserably to do so when speaking to "Craigy" last week.

No history rewrites, no hiding behind hindsight when going against the patently obvious and no more, no-money bullsh*t. You didn't do your due diligence. Get over it and keep your promises to Rafa - he's our only chance of keeping this club United.

s**** but didn't deserve to lose the game.

This, Hudderfield only produced 1 chance, we never took ours.

Carragher saying they were clear winners - utter s*** - we were both poor but as you say they took their chance.

They were much better than us. Their passes go to players on the same team. When their players controlled the ball it usually didn't bounce to a member of the opposing team. The basic technique of our midfield and strikers is appauling and I'm not sure what you can really do about that.

Thought Merino was pretty good. Had a few poor moments, but he's young and making his first start in the Premiership, so don't want to be too harsh on him. Should have definitely done better for the goal, but looked to have that little bit more quality than anyone else in our team.

Going in hard on Ashley right now is great. He needs to shoulder ever part of what happens to this club from his under funding.

At this early stage, we're not devoid of all hope. However, there were some seriously worrying early signs today - Elliot's kicking only gets worse, Gayle barely got a kick, Perez missed a big chance, and Diame is simply dreadful. In terms of the game as a whole, we actually seemed to have weathered the inevitable early storm but lost an awful goal straight after HT (too much space), and then failed to capitalise on our best spell when Hudds sat back a bit.

I still think it is too early to judge this season - but would like for us to push for another CF/#10, LB and GK. Pigs might fly if we get all three. Certainly, the home match against West Ham on Saturday takes on big early significance though, considering their own start.

Lossl looks a good signing for them, that was a top level save. Those little moments make the difference. He saves that, Perez misses a 5 yard volley. Manquillo messes up a pull back when in behind. Its just little moments.

They haven't actually changed their side much.

Lossl, Jorgensen, Ince & Mounie the main difference v the side we beat 3-1.

We had Merino instead of Colback & Gayle instead of Murphy. I think if it had been last seasons Gayle, we'd have looked a lot better. Without his quality, we looked toothless.

I would say this if our opponent is not Huddersfield.  Take a look at their squad.  If you say they have a superior team and the reason we lose is because we have shit players and major weakness in our squad, fine.  Rafa is really free from any blame then.
