I think it's the players around him aren't as good. I might be off here, but I think it's the opposite. Portugal know Ronaldo is their main man and they play like it. Argentina are caught in two minds whether to play as a team with Di Maria, Aguero, Dybala etc, or just utilise Messi. Messi shouldn't have to carry Argentina, but they act like he should without admitting it and end up doing fuck all. I think you're bang on about Portugal but don't agree about Argentina. I think their only tactic is for Messi to run the game from deep but it's too easy to defend against because they've not had the sense to play any proper wide men and stretch the play. He would also be a significantly worse player if he did that. Nah, can play deep but have more license to roam forward is what I'd like to see, especially for Croatia.
