Ikon
Works very hard but too slow in his actions imo and not very good technically. Love him to bits but he's our weakest link now and hopefully we can get a CM in this window. Nice option to have in the squad. Some might say it sounds harsh, and probably does. It's what it is imo. As said, like him. Edited January 11, 2023 by Ikon

I just don't get this. Tielemans has looked terrible recently. Surely we'd be better off playing bruno/joe/joe in the midfield and bringing ASM back if we want attacking threat at the cost of a player who won't press effectively or bring structure? I guess the point I’m making is brining another quality midfielder in would take us up another level. Someone with Tielemans ability even if he hasn’t been bang on recently. I think Bruno, Joelinton, Willock in midfield with ASM or Isak left wing forward is our best line up fwiw. That was basically our lineup v City. buzza
Tielemans was awful last night and has been poor for a while. there was one instance where he was dispossesed in his own half and made no effort to keep up with our player. I don´t like his lack of spirit/fight, he has plenty technical ability but seems a bit unreliable defensively. No upgrade on our midfielders tbh. If we get a player it should be a real challenger for a starting place, just don´t think tielemans could "work" his way into Eddie´s set up.

I can’t imagine Tielemans grafting like SL. I know he’d bring all sorts,of,other qualities but the legwork SL is putting in is really impressive. Gaztoon
I like Tielemans..but if he was trying to advertise himself to howe and the club last night he failed miserably.

The team is so good at the moment. In midfield, I would prefer a like-for-like replacement - just better/more quality. Someone who is a strong runner, presses all day.. but ideally faster and technically superior. That's a rare midfielder. You could lose a little physically if the technique/passing was up there like Bruno but again... a rare player.

His workrate is superb. He's basically much better than Longstaff at everything.

Tielemans has ben turned and outrun so many times by central midfielders that it's become a running joke and arguably overplayed. But there is no way Tielemans could get through the running and cover the ground that Longstaff does. Not even close.

Adam
Question on how we upgrade him, who could we buy that has the same defensive work rate as him? Hoping he scores against Fulham, though last night his shots later on were much better.
Kanj
Essentially need to sign a box to box runner with better technical ability and we’ve got the upgrade or competition for him. As I’ve said before in a perfect world, it’s either a Maddison type or Joelinton finds his long term place there with Willock on the left side of the 3 and we sign a proper wide forward to play left side. Ikon
Not gonna be after him but i see someone like Seko Fofana quite perfect as a replacement, especially if we can offer creativity from wide too. Full of energy and great ball carrying ability. Technical ability but also offers end product combined with pace and physicality. Let Bruno be the one dictating play and tempo. Wild Geese
Longy is turning into good player, he's getting better and better, his defensive covering and his attacking support play, has really turned him int a box-to-box mid-field player. I agree that he’s becoming a box-to-box player, and I think he has good vision and has shown some nice quality at times with his passing in forward positions. However, he can only ever truly be considered box-to-box if he sorts out his shooting

Jamie87
Longstaff is the best product from our academy in arguably over a decade. He's obviously a massive fan and comes from a Newcastle mad family. He gets a pass from me on making the odd blunder just for that. But when you add in the fact he works harder in that mid 3 than anyone else, covers such a huge amount of grass, and seemingly has an immaculate attitude, I really think he deserves his place in the team currently and some of the criticism is way over the top. He's only 25 and working under a good coach now, he still has head room. Also, it's documented that online criticism and comments in the media caused him to have a bit of a personal crisis recently. We should back him and hope he continues to grow.
