Sean Longstaff

Weirdly, definitely seem to play better with him in the team - although, that could also just be the turn of the recent dip. Either way, we've looked better of later and if people want to give him credit for that, I'm not going to stop them O0

It happened similar to last year, when after the opening day win, we had a bad spell before he came back into the team and our results started to change.

He’s being kept around because he’s English/homegrown, cheap and can follow instructions, although with very limited execution most of the time.

I can just about cope with that. I wouldn’t object to him coming on for the last 10-15 minutes to see out a game or give players like Tonali a rest.

Howe has just had a full season to work with Tonali. If people are suggesting he still can’t follow instructions as well as Longstaff, there is something terribly amiss with our star signing or coaching methods.

Tonali can follow instructions, but he is a different player being asked to follow different tactical instructions to Sean. Tonali just couldn't do what Longstaff does, Longstaff can't do things Sandro can, and that's OK, that's why you have a squad of players and a manager in Eddie who can coach and get use from both players, it is also OK as a fan to like both players, they both give us something, the constant battle some people create of Sandro v Longstaff just now is tedious, enjoy them both.

Longstaff is being judged by some fans just now v a mythical unicornesque performance from Sandro that might happen, that is only created in peoples mind, it is a bit unfair to be honest.

Hasn't done the fall to the ground expecting a free-kick when trying to shield the ball mishap he was infuriatingly doing for parts of last season, well done him.

That's a good stat tbh - I'd like to see the results tho, who we were vs etc.

Its the following:

Wins: 11 - Notts Forest (A), Arsenal (H), Tottenham (A), Villa (H), Chelsea (H), Leicester (A), Fulham (H), Brentford (A), Tottenham (H), Everton (A), Norwich (A)

Draws: 3 - Leeds (H), Arsenal (A), Crystal Palace (A)

The Stat is Premier League only fwiw, they did all start together against Dortmund last year and we lost 2-0.

Yes, and the earlier part of this season too. It is interesting as it's as though something's clicked in his head - gives me some hope that he might have turned some sort of psychological corner.

It is. Although I'd also be interested to know how those results compare with games where we've had Willock, Bruno and Joelinton but no Longstaff (I doubt there are many of those, mind).

Just reading an article today  about how Longstaff getting a new contract is not a foregone conclusion. He could still get sold for PSR value as it would represent pure profit.

This is the issue really, otherwise why would we need to sell him? I'm sure he'd be happy to be a squad player on a fairly modest salary. PSR is really a massive problem for a club outside the cartel that wants to compete.

Isn't he out of contract in the summer? A Jan sale would be for a pittance, and he's too old for a tribunal fee.

The press seem to think we have triggerd a year long extension so was due to expire 2025 but adding a year on goes to 2026. The same rumours we want to offer a longer term deal but guess he would be 100% profit if we don't lose a purple and want to mix up the midfield or need psr headway.
