His good performances have been few and far between (one being the final, admittedly) for a while now in addition to his quite shocking injury record. Always, always sell a player when they are at their peak and the decline is about to begin. i think it was fairly obviously with Joelinton due to his style. The tough one will be Bruno who could be shattered by the time he’s 30 and we miss the boat on selling, or he could play at an elite level till he’s 33. Elliottman
I’d be amazed if anyone thought we should have sold him at the time of his new contract. He was in peak form and we had no money to replace him (down to his last 12 months on contract as well I think?) Hindsight is great but that was never a sensible option at the time. Ramsay needs to be starting games now though.

I love him and he's the personification of the club since the takeover, but I'd have thought about selling him in the summer and bringing a more designated DM in. Whether it affects squad harmony or not, these sort of decisions in terms of outgoings we've avoided. And Howe has never really played a DM, arguably one of our and his shortfalls. He wasn’t in peak form either, between New Years Day 2024 and the end of that season he appeared in 4 games. FWIW I’d have brought Ederson from Atalanta in who at the time we were linked with iirc. We were tangled the fuck up in PSR issues and we’d not have got market rate for him. Not to mention he’s been an ever present when fit and EH loves him. Edit- looking back at the reaction to his new contract (page 400) it’s overwhelming positive. Edited November 2, 2025 by Elliottman

I’m not sure, we were bidding around £60m-£70m in an attempt to get Guehi that summer and a Joelinton sale would’ve added more funds. I think we’d have got more money for him that summer than we would now, no one else is paying the wages we pay him and it’s before his stark decline in form and how much he impacts games on a regular basis. Also, that he was on more money than Isak was frankly outrageous imo regardless of the tribal feelings we all have about the rat’s conduct this summer. Howe loving him could well be part of a problem in terms of loyalty to players. He’s just not up to it on the ball at all and shouldn’t be starting games regularly for us imo. I can’t remember him getting plaudits for anything he’s done with the ball recently and that’s an issue. He doesn’t have ability in possession to fall back on for when his physicality isn’t the perk it was and it looks like that’s becoming the case this season. It’s not strictly Joelinton’s fault but I think it highlights a glaring issue we have in that we barely have any top technical footballers in the squad. Newcastle Fan
Not even a debate that he's been fantastic for us in midfield and just watch his performance in the cup final to see just how good he is. However with Miley starting to shine we need to rely on him less, his style of play works but it seems to have taken a toll and we can afford to sit him out a bit and try something else. Yeah good shout but I think it's now Ramsey for that position.

You also have to decide who you ride until the wheels fall off. Joelinton was never that candidate. Bruno might be. I’ve said a lot it was Ashworths plan to selll him and it would’ve been a smart play. BUT without big Joe we don’t achieve what we did last season. But we would be better placed going forward in the position.
OoOGazOoO
I love Joelinton when we need to be combative and get at teams, but he is so limited technically, that if we need anything in that area of skills, he can't provide unfortunately. AyeDubbleYoo
Can't believe he was left on the pitch today, even at the start we didn't need him. Can only think that it's because he's not playing on Weds, or something about managing other players' minutes. Dunno.

I think that's not quite true. He can sometimes show really nifty footwork, and deal with the press better than many in our team. But this season he looks off the pace, similar to when he had previous spells carrying an injury. He's never been an elite level midfielder, but those aren't ten a penny either. When we were negotiating his new contract I did wonder then if it would be the right time to cash in and buy a replacement, but then I guess we wouldn't have a cup win under our belts. Lotus
Thought he looked under pressure when there pressing was intense. I knew they wouldn’t keep that up though. He always looks better when the opposition look knackered. Glad he got a goal. Hope he continues the 2nd half form.
Pilko
He was poor first half, much better second half I thought. Gave the ball away loads, first 20 minutes between him and Gordon they must have gifted possession away 3 or 4 times each. Did like some of the runs he was making, like for the offside goal which was closer than initially thought & the chance where he stuck the rebound over. And of course for the goal, well positioned. I think he'll continue to be important for us in certain games & scenarios but I'd like to see Ramsey and/or Miley get their share of minutes and not see Joe as an automatic first pick. AyeDubbleYoo
Combining Joelinton, Burn and out of form Gordon down the same side is always going to result in some very awkward situations. SteV
Thought that was his best game of the season by a distance, granted, a pretty low bar. Looked a bit of an attacking threat for the first time in a while.
Newcastle Fan
Yesterday showed some value in having him in the side, when they started pressing us high it was his runs in behind that unlocked their defense. however his overall touch still felt off. Lush Vlad
Like most them, I thought he was dreadful in the early exchanges. But as the game opened up, he came into his own. He needs an open game with space to really flourish and be at his best. I thought he showed that he can still be somewhere close to his best when he has his conditions. Albeit against a fairly poor, injury ravaged opposition. What was most promising was he was back to making those runs off the left. Could have had a hat trick on another night. I don't think he is back, based on a goal and a decent showing against a weak team. In the same way I don't think he is finished based on a few below-par performances and a bad game on Sunday. I think the same can be said for most of the team after last night and the West Ham game.

They were funneling/we were forcing all of our play down that side for ages and it was painful to watch. The same as when we would have say Tino, Longstaff and Murphy on the right. You don't have much chance of working nice passing moves and retaining possession. Funnily enough, that spell in the second half where we either went for the long diagonal or passed through the middle. We absolutely dominated. Our ponderous passing along the back 4 and then hospital balls down the line are a problem most weeks, I think. As plenty of others have mentioned. We have our wingers too involved in the build up and it just isn't there game. Going off topic here. But we need to find a way to get the lines and players closer together centrally. Woltemade is just an interested/frustrated observer for most of the game.

andycap
He gave it away a fair bit early doors but he was determined to win it back and not let his head drop. And he excelled at getting in behind them with his clever runs and causing all sorts of trouble for them.
