Allan Saint-Maximin (now playing for Al-Ahli)

As others have said it is likely that we will be downflating the media reporting of the fee as it will clearly be a controversial sale in the eyes of the rest of the league, so bare that in mind when whinging about the price.

Find it telling that Maxi’s going to Saudi at 26.

If he was genuinely viewed as hot property, at his age a decent side in a decent league would have been in for him.

It’s been clear he’s not part of Howe’s mid term plans so if clubs fancied him they would have acted. Especially for £30m.

Disagree personally, I think football has moved on in terms of a lot of clubs who can’t win are targeting younger players and looking to flip them.

Also, financial other leagues can’t compete and pay the fees demanded by EPL sides.

All depending on you believing the dodgy £30m rumours.

This has nothing to do with FFP man, you don't sell Maxi for the same price or less than you're bringing in someone in the same position 'to improve FFP'.

Again what we're telling the media just makes no sense. Maxi's always seemed dispensable to Howe, a shame as he's unplayable on his day, and great to watch, but Barnes (or whoever) will likely end up contributing a lot more.

There are people who have explained in detail in this thread how it improves our FFP

position though.

This will definitely come out as "undisclosed fee" and will be owt between £30-50m. If it's one in, one out (Barnes), meh. I think he will improve us but not massively. If it means we get another one or two in on top then it's worth it.

Thought the thinking was you don't then dump the 30m entirely upfront at Barnes door?

This is the reason right there, Maxi contributes very little to the team in 8 out of 10 games, don’t get me wrong he can be unplayable in those 2 games out of 10, but for where we want to be we can’t carry a player for 3/4 of a season

That’s not how it works with FFP, you can pay the whole fee upfront but the fee is still amortised over 5 years for FFP purposes

26 is still young and if he’s on £40k a week that makes him very affordable

A club can’t flip him at his age, but he’s a relatively cheap option given how much people rave about him

Going to Saudi suggests he isn’t generating genuine interest from established leagues

Unless he prefers Saudi because of big wages, rather than playing in a decent league for less money

But you’d have to assume he isn’t generating genuine interest from established leagues, otherwise he wouldn’t be off to Saudi at his age.

Dont underestimate the power of money, especially over those already bitten by the disease.

Maxi also appears to be very flash

Got the Lambo and also a Bentley etc

Not criticism of a wealthy bloke having expensive things, but he seems to embrace the millionaire footballer lifestyle

When he signed his new contract in 2020, the reports from then suggest he was then on closer to 70k p/w which seems more realistic given at the time he was basically our best player.

I think at £30-£40m a PL club might make a late move for him. That’ll test whether the wages are a more important factor than playing in a European major league.

Everton or Palace would have been natural homes for him but the former are skint and Zaha looks to be resigning for the latter. Villa want Diaby and are relatively stocked there. West Ham have the cash but Moyes is probably too pragmatic to have him in his system. Brentford and Brighton prefer money ball bargains. Fulham, Forest, Bournemouth, Luton, Sheffield United? Nah.

FFP is 100% bullshit but we don’t appear to be maxing out our commercial revenue.  We could have a training kit sponsor, training ground sponsor, ground sponsor etc.  I was hoping this summer the far more commercial deals would have been announced.

I'm thinking we're waiting until we've consolidated at least being a top 6/7 club for a year or two more then we can justify higher deals easier.

Dan Burn drives a Smart car

But seriously, some footballers aren’t overly flash.

Maxi seems to love the trappings of wealth, which is fair enough. I’m not criticising him for that.

I'm sure Bellamy used to say Andy O'Brien was the poorest rich man he'd seen or something.

Apparently used to live with his parents in Harrogate driving around in a used car while he played for us.

Burn is the exception then, and given his career history we are the first club to actually give him a premier league salary.

Most footballers at ASM age and earning power are driving fancy cars.
