Mears made his debut on 11 February 2009 in a friendly match against Nigeria, playing 71 minutes of the 0–0 draw at the New Den. Mears said, "It was a fantastic feeling to be selected. When John Barnes first phoned me I was really excited. It's a fantastic opportunity to play for Jamaica." Despite making an appearance for Jamaica, it was later reported that Mears' father, whom he thought he qualified through, may actually be from Sierra Leone. An official from the Jamaica Football Federation stated that Jamaica fielded Mears without undergoing thorough checks because verification of a player's passport is not required for friendly internationals and such matches do not affect a player's international eligibility. After discovering his ineligibility to play for Jamaica, Mears petitioned FIFA to have the cap rescinded and have his ongoing eligibility to play for England reaffirmed. Just one possible suggestion for the runners up round points calculation. If you get knocked out first compared to last, you have far more opportunities to get a lower score to carry into that runners up place, so maybe a tweak to the calculation for this going forward. So: Rocker and Gorilla got knocked out in the first round, so they carried forward three scores: 28 from Round 1, zero from Round 2, 12 from Round 3. Sewelly and Leon were next to go out, they carried forward two scores: 17 and 12. Wullie and Neesy got knocked out in the third round and only carried forward one score: 42. Carrying forward three scores theoretically should leave you more at risk of starting the Runners-Up question with a high number of points, than carrying forward one score. It was just a bit of a bugger that you and Wullie didn't do particularly great on the round you got knocked out in, meaning you lost that theoretical advantage. HOWEVER, that was just a starter for ten, and very much open to suggestions. The overriding principle is purely that we're keeping everyone in the contest to some extent, despite being knocked out.
